The family of a young, intellectually disabled woman brutally murdered and stuffed inside a mattress in North Carolina is incensed after one of her alleged killers was allowed out on bond.

Mary Collins was 21 when she was stabbed 133 times at an apartment in the NoDa neighborhood of Charlotte. Her body was found – hidden and covered in plastic wrap – on April 4, 2020.

Four people have been charged in her murder.

Her family says she had roughly the mental capacity of a 15-year-old due to her diagnosis of 22q deletion syndrome, also known as DiGeorge Syndrome, said to be the second-most common genetic disorder behind Down’s Syndrome.

The day after Collins was found, Salerno and two others – Lavi Pham, 23, and Kelly Lavery, 24 – were arrested and charged with the same three crimes. Prosecutors allege that Pham and Lavery, who the woman knew to be her friends, lured her to their apartment and planned to kill her in retribution for refusing to have sex with them both simultaneously, according to the Observer.

Salerno spent over three years in jail and was initially denied bond before he was released. Lavery pleaded guilty last year to her role in the slaying and is serving a minimum 25-to-32-year sentence in state prison. Pham is in jail and awaiting trial. He and Salerno have both pleaded not guilty in the case.

Unbelievable that JS is out on bond. This was a horrific meaningless crime and he needs to be incarcerated while waiting for trial. KL was fortunate to get a plea deal, Mary Collins wasn't so fortunate. These people are monsters!

LE missed finding MC on first attempt while checking the mattress, that's how planned the crime was to hide their murder. It is a story so unbelievable to know that people are so heartless.

Mary Collins’ murder during the early days of COVID-19 lockdowns didn’t receive the attention it would have gotten in normal times. Collins’ case should have made national headlines given the savagery and brutality shown by her killers – they stabbed her 133 times – and the clinical manner they hid and disguised her body.

As more details of the killing emerge, it appears Mary underwent unimaginable torture before she passed. Collins’ grandmother, Mia Alderman, talked about a new revelation publicized during a trialfor one of the suspects:

“They said Mary had a leash around her neck in the bathtub, bloodied, stabbed, dog leash around her neck. There was an audible gasp in the courtroom, and we started crying.”

James Salerno is out on bond without electronic monitoring, and without traditional no contact orders against the girl who narc'ed on him or the family of Mary Collins.

Phone records place Salerno at the scene of Collins’ murder during and after the time frame it occurred, prosecutors said Thursday. Additionally, prosecutors said, his notes app on his phone included lists of items such as bleach and detergent from that time — items the investigation found were used to clean the crime scene.

It took five days for police to find her body wrapped in plastic and stuffed inside of a mattress in the couple’s apartment, according to a timeline by the family.

The next day, police charged Lavery, Pham, and Salerno, with murder and kidnapping, public records show. Pham and Salerno also were charged with concealing a death. Later, America Diehl, 18, was charged with accessory after the fact and concealing a death, CMPD officials say.

Diehl was released on bond in 2021, according to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office’s website.

In June, Lavery took a plea deal and was sentenced to as many as 32 years in prison, the Observer reported. At his last court hearing Pham pleaded not guilty to murder and kidnapping charges.
