Delighted with the outcome today, it was the right decision. I'm from Limerick myself, I know members of the Fitzpatrick family, my kids have attended Mag's creche and I knew Jason to see, but not personally. Friends of mine are friends of theirs. I'm delighted for all of them, and those close to the families who have suffered these past 2 years. Most admiration goes to TL & DL who have just been amazing from the get go. What a fantastic sister and brother-in-law they are to Jason.

Regards the case, there were no winners here. Multiple families destroyed and a real human tragedy. Two kids orphaned, and I just hope they turn out ok as they go through their teenage years and in to adulthood. Unlike many here, I do not believe all the Martens to be the 'evil' caricatures that some like to paint them as. MM though must take full responsibility for this entire, sorry affair. Based on her comment regarding the kids 'now losing both parents', I do believe she is mentally unwell. Because that was delusion in it's purest form. Her parents made really bad decisions and in the process they have destroyed their entire family unit and everything they have ever worked for. TM will die in jail and his wife will die apart from him. They will also probably lose everything else in the upcoming civil case. As sad as all that is, it is fully deserved. I thought the blood spatter expert was outstanding, as were the prosecutions closing arguments & rebuttal.

As for what really happened that night, only the three Martens can truly answer that. Whether we'll ever hear the full truth is another thing. Putting aside the narrative offered at trial, I don't really believe the story that was presented. My gut feeling is that MM attacked JC with the brick (after possibly drugging him) and had already killed or incapacitated him before TM ever got involved - the blood and matter on the brick meant it did serious damage. I believe everything after that including the bat, the over kill, the wall indentations and the scene in general was all staged after JC had already passed. He was moved. He received blows after death and his body was cool when paramedics arrived. And that is why the Martens deserve every minute of the sentence they were handed. They chose lies and deceit and took a gamble on authorities believing the concocted story of a 30 year FBI veteran.

I have enjoyed my 17 months on websleuths. Admittedly I did more reading than posting, but it was a great source of information. Special thanks to stephenddoody for all the Irish media articles.<modsnip> there were also some excellent posters here who were objective and kept an open mind at all times in what was a very difficult case. Most important though was that the right result was delivered by the jury.

Thanks, and see you all again if the civil case features on here!

Greetings from Australia - I woke up early and checked here and the J4J Facebook page, hoping for a verdict and there it was! Now it's midday, and in between taking my children to school, doing the household chores and going for a walk with friends, I've read through over 20 pages of this thread, followed links to news stories and videos, and I feel justice has truly been done. I am so glad Molly had to sit and listen to Jack's statement and that she will never see those children again.

Regarding the previous discussion on sympathy for the Martens - I have NO sympathy for them, but I can see the tragedy for their family - while the Corbett family suffered a tragedy from an evil outside force, the Martens' tragedy is more of a Greek tragedy where they were destroyed by their own hubris. TM is 67 and Molly is 33 - so she has been his daughter for exactly half his life. At 33/ 34, when his baby daughter was born, he would have already established the career path he is still so proud of today - his law degree, being admitted to the bar, being employed by the iconic FBI. Not just personal pride, but also the arrogant pride of seeing himself and his family as "better" than other people. <modsnip> you can see Molly's parents both had this arrogance, and they established their place in the world to reinforce their pride.
Molly grew up, probably an outsider within her family because she was troubled and difficult, so all she wanted was her own status and identity. She makes me think of Goldie Hawn's line in the movie Housesitter - "I wanted to live in the picture." But unlike her parents, she couldn't establish anything substantial for herself. And then she went to Ireland and inserted herself into a ready-made family. She had an identity, status, money, she was "living in the picture." If she had been satisfied with that, she could have lived an amicable life with Jason, either married or divorced, as an integral family member, a loving stepmother to his children. But she went too far - she wanted Jason erased from the picture, so she could have the children all to herself. They destroyed Jason through the hubris of their entitlement, and their punishment isn't just jail, it's knowing that they have destroyed that image of themselves. All of TM's achievements have been overshadowed and wiped out by his actions that night; Molly's insane desire to be the only mother, the only guardian of those children means that they are lost to her forever. They were so close to having everything they had ever wanted and they destroyed it all for the sake of something they weren't entitled to take.

Lynch’s statement, delivered in her lilting Irish accent, was moving. “Was he in pain? Did he cry out? … We will never know,” she said. “There are no adequate words for the pain, anger and despair we feel.”

But the body blow, the true kick to the gut, was delivered through the written words of Jack Corbett, gone to Ireland with his younger sister to live with Lynch and her husband David.

“Do I call David ‘Dad’?” the boy said in a statement read by Martin. “I don’t want my dad to be replaced.”

“There is one more thing Molly Martens will not be part of, and that is part of the Corbett family,” the boy wrote. “My burden will not be lifted until she is put away.

“Molly Martens will not be forgotten, either. She will always be remembered as the murderer of Jason Corbett.”

But the words of a child, read into the official record by a prosecutor, will last forever.

The reason we all got so passionately involved in this case, I hope with all my heart that love can heal this little broken heart.

Be True, can I just say I will always remember you for your humour! You were passionate about your beliefs, respectful of others, but your overwhelming ability to 'take the p***' (and your love of an emoji!) made me laugh out loud during some of the most heated posting on this thread. It was lovely knowing you. I am glad we were with them til the end x

What an emotional case this has been.

I cannot add to anything that has already been written here apart from for me, it was the arrogance of Thomas Martens throughout that really got to me. His body language, his demeanour, even as he walked (almost swaggered) in and out of court each day - here was a man so convinced of his own superiority, who honestly thought he could get away with murder, and also claim someone else's children as his 'grandchildren' without any remorse or compassion for their real family. With such a father, is it any wonder that the daughter is how she is? Just my thoughts - nothing else.

Molly needed to hear this....this is what she caused that night.

Jack and Sarah “sometimes have trouble finding joy in the simplest pleasures of life,” Tracey Lynch said. “They are painfully aware there is violence. They cannot trust because adults break their trust.”

He said Sarah also has had a hard time.“We are seen as the family of the Irish man who was murdered by Molly Martens, who is so bad,” he said.

I'm not sure how to put in a link but the FOX8 facebook page has a story from 17 hours ago just as the verdict was breaking and there are a few interesting comments from the Jury foreman Tom Aamland on there.

I had to stop following this case, because I was sure that they would get away with the slaughter of this lovely man, but my faith has been restored in the US justice system.

Good on you, America!

Really interesting, the jury seem to have really put alot into their deliberations. I'm glad they got to see what their conviction means to the Corbett's.
His rationale can't be argued with imo LL, he seems like a fair man. We always did say here her demeanor would be questioned in court. The blue dresses and minimalistic look didn't fool them.

I still feel a stomach churn when I think of her earlier statements in the custody hearings that she was not bi polar, wasn't depressed, was on no meds and then in a selfish effort to save herself a psychiatric report appears yesterday before sentencing.

That last minute introduction of the psych report was so telling. I believe the Martens have been trying to hide and cover up her illness...to her severe detriment for years. Only at the last minute, when desparate, do they admit it!

Maginn's book paints a very sad and sympathetic picture of a young woman who desperately needs hands-on help. But where are her parents? Why is it left to the boyfriend-of-the-month...that TM says he didn't even know...to get her that help?

Maginn says they had no money for tickets, but someone bought her a ticket. And her mother only came twice in 4 years and TM never came. Where is their love, protection, and parental concern for their girl who has been so chaotically sick?

I just cannot fathom it.

But when she comes home as an executive's wife...and he's willing to give them $65,000 for a fancy wddding, and buy her a beautiful home, then MM can be part of their lives again. When she had two healthy children, suitable to be their grandchildren, then MM is acceptable as a daughter.

This was probably the first interval in her life when MM was deemed worthy of being TM's daughter. What a burden on a woman struggling with an illness she can't control and must hide, hide, hide.

She can't admit she's taking the medication that keeps her steady. She can't even defend herself with her psychiatric history. No, instead invent a malicious fiction of DV and smear the man you murdered. Another man who tried so hard to help you.

This is the most pathetic example of family arrogance and ignorance. The arrogant Martens inability to cope with a less than perfect daughter and.... years ago, stand by her and get her the intensive help she needs, has created this tragedy and now destroyed their own family.

Only at the last moment..."oh, did we mention she needs psychiatric help?"
