A Weldon mother has been missing for more than three months, and her family has serious concerns about the investigation into her disappearance.

Family and friends of Jewel Sykes said they last heard from her on Feb. 2 at a home on Pinewood Drive in Roanoke Rapids. Family members said the man she was allegedly with at the property should be a person of interest, but police said he hasn’t been questioned yet.

“Jewel is missing and she’s in danger,” said Sykes’ sister, Laquita Taylor. “We know something has happened to Jewel because this is not like Jewel.”

“The last time that anyone had talked to her, she was at her significant other’s house,” Taylor said of Sykes.

Taylor said Sykes was at the Pinewood Drive home on Feb. 2, and called a friend asking for help.

“[There] was an argument that took place between them, and she wanted a ride to leave,” Taylor said of her sister. “The person went to try to pick her up and she wasn’t there.

“She never showed up, and no one has heard from her since.”

The family believes Sykes' boyfriend should be a person of interest in her disappearance. WRAL News called him and knocked on his door but didn’t get an answer.

WRAL News also took the family’s concerns about him to Weldon police, the agency leading the investigation. Among the questions asked:
  • Was he brought in for questioning?
  • Would police consider him a person of interest in Sykes’ disappearance?
“He has not been questioned to my knowledge at this time due to some other information that we have received,” said Weldon Police Chief Christopher Davis.

The Dock Ellis Foundation has taken a role in assisting in the search for a missing Weldon woman.

The foundation is the legacy of the late Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Dock Ellis and is a national missing persons organization dedicated to bringing minorities home.

It has taken a role in the case of Jewel Sykes, who was reported missing by her family early last month.

“We are assisting Ms. Sykes’s family with the hope we can bring her home to her family, most importantly her children,” the foundation said. “We have activated our 24-hour hotline. At this time there have not been any sightings or tips. Based on interviews with the family this is not normal behavior.”

At the time of the release it had been 63 days with no answers on her disappearance. “We are calling on the community to speak up, contact our anonymous tip line at 888-222-6050 or your local police department.”

Jewel Sykes has been missing since February 2, 2023. The 37-year-old was last seen at the residence she had been staying at with her boyfriend in Halifax County, North Carolina. Jewel’s mother, Lisa Sykes, told Dateline that after not hearing from her daughter for longer than usual, she reported her missing to the Weldon Police Department on March 3.

Lisa says it’s unusual for her daughter to go this long without contacting anyone in the family. “She never stayed away from her children, nor her sisters. She loved her family,” she said. “She’ll never stay away from us, because she knows we love her no matter what.”

According to Lisa, there has been no activity on Jewel’s bank accounts and her social media has been shut down. Dateline spoke with Weldon Police Chief Christopher Davis, who said that authorities have not found any helpful information from Jewel’s accounts “as of yet.”

Lisa believes that her daughter may have met with foul play. “I do think she has been endangered, because I don’t think that my daughter is here, right? Because ain’t no way in this world she will stay away from her mother or her children and her sisters this long,” she said. “She was a beautiful girl. She was beautiful. And I pray that what I’m saying is not true. But as long as she’s been gone, I don’t think that my daughter is alive.”

Same name, same city, same age, could this be the same Jewel Sykes from Weldon NC? In 2021 she lost her 10 year old son in an auto accident while she was driving and was charged with DWI with felony death by motor vehicle. I can't find the disposition of this through the court (December 22, 2021 accident, tentative court appearance February 14, 2022):

"A Weldon woman is tentatively scheduled for a February 14 court appearance in Halifax County to face charges in a December 22 crash which claimed the life of her 10-year-old son.

Trooper J.T. Keeter of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol has charged Jewel Sykes, 36, with DWI, careless and reckless driving, driving while license revoked, fail to maintain lane control, improper child restraint, felony death by motor vehicle and two counts of child abuse.

Keeter said the driving while license revoked charge was based on a previous DWI."

Charged with DWI and a previous DWI makes me scared that alcohol might have been involved in any argument with BF, and we all know alcohol only makes an argument worse. This one is a real worry. MOO.

Great find! It is indeed her according to this article . I was really worried that perhaps something happened with her and the boyfriend. There are reports there was a ransom and police later said that it was someone who hacked her phone. Were police able to track where the phone was last used? And what leads where police looking at pointing to South Carolina?

In my opinion, I believe her disappearance could be linked to the upcoming court cases. The article states that "at the time of her disappearance she was considered in violation of her probation" ... "and the Weldon police chief said Sykes faced up to 60 days in jail". If she has run off and is safe, I hope that she returns and face any charges that she had pending, and hopefully get on with her life.

Police were recently denied a search warrant for the boyfriend's home. A source close to the friend said he wouldn't be speaking to the media and went on to make other statements eluding to Sykes legal issues.

I do hope this young lady is somewhere safe and returns to her family soon!
