Rescue operations to resume for child swept up in flood waters in Union County

Search crews and swift water rescue teams plan to resume rescue operations Monday for a young child who was swept away by flood waters in Union County, according to the sheriff's office.

Around 8:30 p.m. Sunday emergency responders were called to the 7700 block of NC 218 East in New Salem in reference to a mother and her 14-month-old, Kaiden Lee-Welch, swept away by swift moving water from Richardson Creek on N.C. 218

NBC Charlotte reported that the woman drove through flooded waters and got swept away on N.C. Highway 218.

When her car came to a rest on the side of the road, the woman freed the baby from the car seat but lost her grip and let go of him in the rushing water.

Ugh. I may need to take a break from this site, it's too much to handle sometimes.

One-year-old Kaiden Lee-Welch was swept away in rushing waters after his mother drove around barricades on N.C. 218 until her vehicle encountered rushing water flowing and came to rest on several trees, The Union County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.

“She managed to free herself and Kaiden, who was in a car seat, but lost her grip on him in the rushing water,” deputies said.

Poor sweet baby...

With her actions of driving around barriers and could see the rushing waters, makes me question if she really wanted her baby?

Does not sound like the actions a loving mother would take! JMO.

Panic sets in and people act irrationally. An action she’ll live forever let’s not judge her.

Next question is - will she be charged? Those barricades are there for a reason.

I hope not. What would be the purpose of that? To further punish her? She just lost her infant, isn't that enough?

Just sad that an innocent baby had to lose his life because mom wasn't thinking, I guess. Too many babies lose their lives because parents choose to be irresponsible.

I can't even imagine the pain and guilt the mom is going through.
RIP little Kaiden

I can not judge the actions of this mom who was likely panicked and not making good decisions, trying to get out of the flood.

I drove a mile down the road yesterday to check on a neighbor - that was enough for me in the rain and wind. I can’t imagine trying to get 20 miles or more down the road in the dark in those weather conditions. I would have freaked.

Not much more info in msm about this but I did see a quote from the Sheriff's office:
"She was a stranger to the area, driving to just be with her family," the Sheriff said. "Her car got caught in the water and was forced onto an open field."
Mother of 1-year-old swept away by floodwaters charged with involuntary manslaughter
So I'm kind of left a little confused. The sheriff seems to think this was a tragic accident but apparently the DA thought differently?
