If what those close to the source have said is true, i would not be surprised if they are not indicating a sexual assault at this time due to protecting the victim, which is not right, if they do not know who committed the crime...but if they do know, more or less, and simply are trying to rule out other DNA found in the room or something (did someone help someone move, etc) that would be one thing...I am still appalled that no matter who you are (and she wasn't the president, no matter what Raleigh makes of her position there) that a community might be put in jeopardy just to keep things private...someone from LE just needs to make a simple statement indicating that the public should feel safe from this particular perp, if that is the case, they don't need to say anything else.

Police did not collect samples from passers-by. They were collected from neighbors. It's natural to assume neighbors have been in the house at some point. It's much more efficient for RPD to ask neighbors if they had been in the house and to provide dna to match (or not match) those of the perp. One might argue that if a person is innocent, providing dna is not a problem. But, if a neighbor really hesitates, that may be a different story.

If it was put to me that way, I might reconsider giving...

Men????????????????????????????

Sure, women kill other women.
But how many random woman on woman murders are there?

DNA sought from men who live near Taft

Was she in fact raped?
Or
Are they just playing the odds?

I'll say I think they are playing the odds and that this is another example of how they are covering their bases. They are being very careful to rule out any other possibility and are willing to risk that they may either look like idiots or are withholding information from the public. I do believe there is a method to their madness.

I don't know what to think, anymore. I was hoping this would be solved quickly, and not be another one of those year-or-two long mysteries. At the same time, I can appreciate that it takes a tremendous amount of work to solve a murder. They are not handled nicely in an hour, as they are on tv. We all like to think we know what happened, but we don't. Only two people do, and one of them is gone. I cannot help but think of young Kelly Currin Morris, whose bones were found this year in Butner. Everyone felt the husband was "the One", but it took so long to arrest him. It just is never fair that perps go on living and breathing and working, after they have taken a life that was so important to so many others. They forever alter SO MANY OTHER LIVES from that one, impulsive animal action. And the kicker is, that they think they can get away with it!

Laces, the cops needed Kelly's remains to proceed.
The day her bones were discovered, Scott Morris was cuffed.

From day one the cops said Michelle Young's murder was not random.
From day one it was more than obvious her husband Jason was the killer.
Still, it took 3 years to finally see him indicted and arrested.

Just the Fax - such good points, about Lacy and Michelle Young. The problem is that there is no one that is as obvious in this case as there was in the two cases you note. Maybe people who live locally, as right in that neighborhood, might see things differently, but I don't know. The fact that LE is taking only male DNA does make me wonder if semen was found in her body, and LE is trying to match a sample taken with the DNA extracted from the semen in her body, if indeed there was semen in her body.

Lots of supposition, but the "male DNA samples" only brought the sexual assault to mind. But, then again, if LE does have a DNA profile it would clearly show what gender the DNA came from, so that does not necessarily mean a sexual assault took place. But, that does conflict with speculation that the female relative was the suspected perp. So, after all that, back to square one, and I am as baffled as ever. Random or not, relative suspected or not, nothing has been answered.

I still don't understand how people think they can get away with murder. Do they REALLY think they are smarter than the police? This is unfathomable to me. Do people really have this delusion, or is it just an impulsive act that goes out of control and then they have to try to cover it up? Do people ever come forward to say, "I did it, but I did not mean to kill her/him"..... Does anyone know the answer to this, psychologically? I would really like to know the answer.

Good point. A DNA profile will show gender.
If it was semen, it was obviously a rape / murder.
Why not say so? Why continue to say they don't know if it was someone she knew?

People don't know, what they don't know. It's not funny, but I kind of chuckle when I think of the reality tv guy who removed his dead wife's teeth to prevent identificaton of her body, but forgot she had an ID number on her breast implants. He just didn't think it through.

It's possible the victim could have had consentual relations with someone a day before the surgery and the DNA was a result of that. Maybe that person has not come forward and they need to rule him out. That would be a mess. What if you had a lot of evidence agains the sister, but for some reason you have unidentified DNA of a sexual nature that was left from the previous day. That would be hard to explain. Does anyone know which day the victim arrived in Raleigh? Had she gotten there a day or two early or was she transported there by her sister? And were there one or two cars at the Cartier house?

Prancy - a little off topic, but related to your last post. The man took his wife's teeth - can you imagine whatOr, he was thinking when he realized, if he did, that the IDs on her breast implants could be used to help identify her? He must have had that sinking feeling...

Yes I know. He lost lost it and took his own life in Canada soon afterwards. It was big in the news, but don't recall his name right now.

Good questions, especially about the cars.

The state board held their March meeting in Roanoke Rapids (Halifax County) on March 3rd and 4th. That would be Wed. & Thurs. They typically hold their meetings in Raleigh, but sometimes travel to other locations. Roanoke Rapids is north of Raleigh, near the VA border - maybe a 2 hour drive?

My guess would be that she came back to Cartier Drive Thursday evening, spent the night there, and then got up Friday for the surgery. That's how I'd want to do it...

She attended the meeting in Roanoke Rapids, drove back, was probably tired. All that would have been on her mind was her medical procedure the next day . She was not interested in eating, drinking, or having a roll in the hay. She had the procedure done, and her sister was enlisted to look out for her. She didn't. She left the house, probably had a few drinks, came back....and at some point realized she had a mess on her hands, and called 911. Any stranger in the neighborhood would have attracted attention, barking dogs and nosy neighbors. I still say the answer is in the house.

She probably started fasting for the surgery on Thursday evening...

yes, that's correct. by midnight, she would have been NPO. and the day of the surgery she would probably be in Alotta PAIN, and not interested in eating, or in drinking. She would only be interested in alleviating her discomfort and preventing much swelling from occurring. Again, she may have had too much pain medication and became sedated.... Sister went to bed. she slept through till midmorning and then went to check on her sister, who was not doing well. She then calls 911.

I wondered about the cars too.

So, sister may not have arrived until Fri morning just prior to surgery? Or may she was picked up by KT after her meeting and they drove together to the home they were to stay at?

I guess I should look at a google map...lol. That arrangement may be too far out of the way
