Gov. Perdue announces ideas to enhance law enforcement

By: Kira Mathis
...

"I believe in North Carolina for families like Kathy Taft, for families like yours and mine and for all those victims families in the future we need to do this and join other states that are doing the same thing and let DNA collection happen when the person is arrested," Perdue said.

hate to be a debbie downer - but perdue is too little too late for the tafts but could prevent others. However, i heard a report that it would cost $5 mil to implement this. I'd rather see that $ towards education.

I think I'd rather pay the extra money. Dangerous, violent criminals are so difficult to stop. Safety has to come first IMO. Besides, isn't the NC Lottery supposed to be taking care of the education costs?

two thoughts - NC Lottery will take care of ed costs like social security will take care of my retirement. LOL

The proposed legislation is for anyone ARRESTED be DNA tested - Courts will overturn based on innocent til proved guilty. Criminals have more rights than victims.

How odd - first i had heard of this in relation to the Taft investigation

http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/7737844/

"Seelig, who could be arraigned on additional charges in the coming weeks, was arrested in February, on accusations that he knowingly sold bread advertised as being gluten-free – even though tests showed the food as having high levels of the substance.

He was later released from jail on a $100,000 bond.

In court Monday, prosecutors said Seelig later made statements to police regarding Taft's death that turned out to be false."

I saw this story on the news today and found it quite odd. Did this man even know KT and I wonder who he pointed the finger at? I bet I can guess.

What in the world...

"Judge Donald Stephens called Paul Evan Seelig a "danger to society" for giving police bad and misleading information that implicated an innocent person in the March beating death of state school board member Kathy Taft."

Another story

~snipped~

Before Williford's arrest, prosecutors said Seelig offered information about Taft's killer in exchange for some consideration on his felony charges. Assistant District Attorney Jason Waller said Seelig implicated an innocent person in Taft's murder.

Seelig had been expected to plead guilty Monday but Waller said the defendant refused to accept the plea deal.

Instead, Seelig was arraigned on felony charges. Citing Seelig's false statements about the Taft murder, his criminal record and the fact that prosecutors will now seek additional indictments, Wake Superior Court Judge Donald Stephens increased Seelig's bond to $750,000 at the prosecutors' request.

I guess since the person is innocent, it doesn't matter to us who it was.

ETA
In theory. :)

Media reports containing Kathy's name ... but not necessarily related to her murder.

http://www.reflector.com/news/education-advocate-wins-leadership-award-39391

Retired Greenville pharmaceutical executive Larry Seigler has been honored for his contributions to education in Pitt County and across the state.
...Seigler was nominated by the late Kathy Taft, a Greenville native and state board of education member, shortly before her death in March. The two were longtime friends.

Still waiting to hear more....

It has been strangely silent. Shouldn't he have entered a plea by now? If both sides are building up a case, certainly the prosecution should know what they are arguing against: Not guilty? Not guilty by reason of insanity?

I haven't been around her lately. I can't remember how much the NC SBI was involved with this case. Was it mainly the Raleigh Police Dept.? I'm rather concerned about it because the SBI has recently been under a storm of controversy about their practices and techniques. One division has been shut down until further notice by the Attorney General's Office. The bad news about that agency just keeps coming. I'm so afraid that something they did could compromise this case. I pray all is well and that they have the right man.

I'll try to locate some links in case you are interested.

Here's one link. The New and Observer had another huge piece in this past Sunday's edition. The injustice was so obvious that it was sickening.
