She has been identified as Kelly Lane Smith. I will try to find the article about her identification and post it. Here's more on the case:

This article is from August 16th:

Police following tips on woman's slaying

http://www.citizen-times.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060816/NEWS01/60816007/1009

ASHEVILLE – Police still are pursuing leads in the case of a woman whose dismembered body parts have turned up in separate Asheville locations.

“They’re not naming suspects or anything at this point,” Asheville police spokesman John Dankel said, but “they’re still getting information from people on the street.”

Kelly Lane Smith spent much of her life on the streets of Asheville, arrested repeatedly for prostitution and other charges.

Then, on July 31, a skull and other bones police believe came from Smith’s body were found in the French Broad River. A week later and a mile away, severed hands and other body parts were found in a drainage culvert.

Thanks for the update. I searched Kelly Lane Smith, Kelly Smith, I couldn't find out anything about her.

Do you have any more info? Was she listed as missing, when did she go missing etc?

I listened to the audio of the father linked in the August 16th article I just posted.

( George Smith, the father of Kelly Lane Smith - whose remains were discovered in two separate places in Asheville within the last two weeks - describes Kelly as a young lady with a bright future who made some horrible choices. (1,470 KB)

It does not sound like she was reported missing. He says after they had not heard from her for about a week he told his wife we'll be reading about Kelly. He says she was always a leader and very bright. Could have been anything she wanted to be, but she was on crack cocaine and followed the money. Said it was a waste and said that she wanted out of that lifestyle. He thinks it was one of those men (johns?) who did this to her.

I live in Asheville and have followed this story. The most tragic part is that she has a young daughter Nikki that does not understand completely what and why this happened to her mommy. Her father spoke on the local news this evening about the case and its progress. Not much progress on catching the killer, but they LE have hired a professional profiler to help on the case. Also, in Asheville, a year or so ago another prostitute was found dead in the French Broad River. I believe they are investigating to see if there are similarities or parallels in these two cases.

Hi guys, I live 10 min. north/west of Asheville. The troubling thing to me about this is the way the bones were left in 2 different places. I'm glad they could identify her for both her and the familys sake too.

That is so sad about her daughter. I hope they find the killer because it does sound like the cases could be linked. I'm not far from Asheville...about 35 to 40 minutes away.

I'm a transplant from the piedmont area. I've been here for two years and I love it! I don't miss the traffic at all and I never tire of the scenery.

we love Ashville---been there about 7 times last 15 years, most recently last year after Hurricane Wilma gave us a beating here in Palm Beach County---Once the storm passed,we knew electricity would be off for a lonnng time,so we headed to Ashville to get away---love the Blue Ridge parkway thru the mountains and that Vanderbilt mansion in Ashville is unreal--

From February 2010 (scroll down):

http://www.ashevilledailyplanet.com/component/content/article/2379-police-blotter-february-2010

A man who Asheville police had considered a “person of interest” in a slaying and dismemberment case pleaded guilty on Jan. 11 to charges of assaulting a prostitute.

Lewis Kyle Wilson was sentenced to 15 to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to one count of assault inflicting serious bodily injury and various drug charges...

That case and other reports of abuse by prostitutes led police to search Wilson’s home, where they seized teeth and hair they thought might link him to the 2006 murder of Kelly Lane Smith. But the items’ DNA did not match Smith’s.
