The area is not as rural as they describe it in the article. The school is quite close to a major route around Raleigh and is also near the Raleigh-Durham airport.

I am constantly amazed at elementary schools that allow students who are car riders to leave the building unescorted. In Little Rock and the surrounding suburbs (maybe all of AR, but I can't speak to that personally) students aren't allowed to leave the building until the car that's picking up the child has reached the front of the pick up line. Even the middle school in the district my daughter attends follows the same policy. I hope this little boy is found soon and found safe.

Aren't there walkers tho? Our elementary has a huge subdivision behind it and they made all those kids walkers with the last budget cuts. The bell rings and they walk out and home...now there isn't woods and the first main crossroad has a school worker there so kids can cross etc..but after that they are on their own.

When my kids school did that I either picked them up myself or took turns with another trusted parent to go get them. Kids walking home alone are a perverts dream.

I can only think of a couple of schools where kids do walk home because most of the schools around here are situated on VERY busy streets, but an adult still has to come get them from the school and walk with them. No kids are released from school on their own. It's a protocol that makes perfect sense because a 5 year old in kindergarten should never leave on their own, which is basically what allowing kids to leave on their own would permit. If any kids can leave on their own, eventually there's going to be some parent out there who would raise a stink to let their 5 year old walk home alone.
