The PD didn't share the information that his residence is at an assisted living facility, and he had only lived there for 8 days when he went missing.

*****
Larry Darnell Burton, who has dementia, was last seen around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday night at a facility on 1215 Moody Street in Greensboro. His daughter, who lives in Florida, said he had only been there for eight days after being released from Moses Cone Hospital.

*****
Determined to find her father, she turned to Facebook, sharing his photo and asking for help. The post quickly spread, inspiring dozens of neighbors and strangers to join the search. Some people arrived on horseback, while others brought drones to scan the thick wooded areas near the facility.

On Friday morning, volunteers gathered at Simpkins Elementary School, ready to comb nearby fields and trails on foot, on ATVs, and even with bloodhounds.

It's a desperate plea from a Triad family to help them locate a man who's been missing for two weeks.

*****
Swift and volunteers say they're not stopping until they can bring Larry home and give him the treatment he needs. He had a message for his grandfather.

"Just give us a sign something, poke your head out, you're coming home with us you don't have to worry about it no more," Swift said.

There's a $5,000 reward for anyone who can help locate Burton. The family plans to hold another big search party Saturday.

I so hope he is found. Shared with retired friends in North Carolina.

It's been 2 weeks since Larry Burton went missing. I will be heading to the area this afternoon to start a search of the waters in the area. Specifically South Buffalo Creek which runs along the south and east from where Larry went missing. The creek is less then a mile walk from the home. Easiest access is through Barber Park. People with Dementia and Alzheimer's have been known to be drawn to water. Similar to children with Autism.

I am adding some details below to help readers better understand how I plan water searches.

The creek appears to have steep banks for excessive flow conditions which has occurred several times since Larry went missing due to heavy rainfall. On July 6th the creek rose rapidly from 2ft to 12 ft then back down to 2ft. On July 9th when TS Chantel came through the area the creek again rapidly rose to 13ft then back down to 2ft. On July 13th and July 15th are two more events that rise to 13ft and 9ft respectively. Below are the gages for the creek upstream and downstream of the park.

South Buffalo Creek at US220 Nr Greensboro (1).webp

South Buffalo Creek at McConnell Rd Nr Greensboro.webp

The heavy flows on the 6th and the 9th would correspond to a 3-7 day float cycle caused by decomposition in 70° to 80° water. These flows could move a body further downstream or into marsh areas along the creek. The other flows could move the body further downstream. There is also the possibility of being entangled above or below the water in a debris pile or foliage.

A year ago while searching for a missing Jet Skier in the flooded Myakka River down in Florida, we found him on Day 9, 3 miles down river from the site of the accident tangled up in the lower branches of a live oak tree that were just starting to become visible in the lowering water.

Below is my initial search area.

With the Barber Park so close to the Family Care Home, which has been reported to not be licensed, the staff may have taken Larry and others to the park for some outdoor time. He has also live in this area for quite some time and is probably familiar with the park.

There are other water areas of interest in the area such as the pond seen below which has easy access from the street.

I will be using aerial drones for searching banks and marsh areas, custom remote controlled sonar search boats for the creek, especially in deep pockets, as well as ponds, and underwater submersibles and camera systems to access sonar anomalies and debris piles. Looking at the dense foliage on either side of the creek, I'll probably need to conduct the search from my inflatable paddleboard.

I will post search results here. Please let me know if you find information like this useful.

*****
In a letter obtained by FOX8, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services formally urged the Guilford County District Attorney’s Office to pursue criminal prosecution against the facility for operating without a license and neglecting Burton.

*****
According to the North Carolina Division of Health Services Regulation, they have also sent a cease and desist order to the operation and referred the case to the local law enforcement for investigation.

Met with the family and other searchers Saturday morning. The family and some of the searchers are aware of these posts, so this is an update for them as well as the Websleuths community.

I cleared the long pond that I posted about previously and did some drone overflights of a hard to reach marsh area. Also looked at access to South Buffalo Creek from Barber Park. Much of it to the west of the bike shop at the southern end of the park is fenced off with a 6ft chain link fence and barb wire and to the east is heavy woods. But right in the middle near the bike shops parking it is clear and you can walk up to the bank of the creek from there. I think South Buffalo Creek needs to be searched for several miles down river from at least this point but I plan to start a bit further upstream. (Note: The clear section by the bike shop is a tad bit more to the east then I indicated. )

1753014658485.webp

There is a section of the fence missing, indicated on the west side, where you can go through and have access to the drainage ditch on the other side which is a sheer drop of 10 - 15ft.

1753015089011.webp

1753015172330.webp

This drainage ditch leads to the South Buffalo Creek. City of Greensboro needs to address this dangerous condition.

Persons with Dementia and Alzheimer's tend to wander in a downward direction. Less effort and thought to go downhill then uphill. Another reason why they gravitate towards water. The park and creek are downhill from his last known location.

1753016675358.webp

I looked for access points to the creek where I can put in and take out. I can tow my Jeep with my truck and drop the Jeep at the take out point near an In & Out Market. Then drive to Biscuitville and put in there. It's about 6 miles of creek to search on paddleboard. This is how I typically paddle rivers by myself when the take out is downriver. I have a sonar rig I strap to my paddleboard so I can check deep spots in the creek. I will also search the banks and any debris piles.

1753017055800.webp

Figuring out the logistics to get this done later this week. Need to be cautious about rainfall. This creek can rise rapidly. May need to coordinate with authorities. I have a second paddleboard if someone wants to join me. If you have my Cell# send me a txt, or DM me here.

Before I do the creek, I need to clear some more ponds in the area. Planning to head back tomorrow to do this. It will be easier to get permission then on a weekend. All of these ponds are owned by the state of NC. Part of NC A&T University. The orange Rectangle is a high chain link fence so that pond is unaccusable. The others can be walked to. A white wooden fence for ascetics at most with many gaps.

That's it for now.

I am continuing to look for Larry. On Thursday I met with the A&E University Farm to take a look at the ponds on their properties. They were very helpful and have been watching for Larry since he went missing. To get to these ponds, Larry would have had to climb over many fences. Cattle are kept in different areas and for one pond there are 6 fences between the pond and the woods or road. The other ponds have 6ft chain link fences around them. All extremely unlikely. They are staying vigilant and continue to keep a watch out for Larry.

I went back to the long pond on Beaumont Dr. to sonar map it again since this is the closest pond to were he went missing and very close to where scent K9's found his scent on 700 block of Banner Ave which is 2 streets away. Again I did not find any indications he was in this pond.

Here is what sonar mapping looks like. I run the outer edges first, then several passes across the center.

1753536040899.webp

Unfortunately since it is so hot out, I wore shorts. Bad choice. By the time I was done sonar mapping the pond with my remote controlled sonar boat, about 30 minutes, the backs of my legs were covered in mosquito bites to the point where my legs swelled up and I could hardly bend them. I even used bug spray before going down to the pond. The mosquito's are so bad down by the creeks and ponds one would think this would drive Larry away from these areas..

I still plan to search the creeks draining into South Buffalo Creek and to search this creek as well. Next weekend appears to have a cool front moving in. Highs in the low 80's. I can wear more clothing to protect against the mosquito's and not get heat stroke. I'll walk the creeks or use my paddleboard as necessary.

I still pray that Larry is somewhere safe and will be home soon. Until then, I will work to rule out these areas that are very difficult and hazardous to search.

Continued my search for Larry Burton Yesterday. I walked, climbed, ducked, and waded my way through a section of a drainage ditch the drains into South Buffalo Creek and a bit downstream of the creek as well. As expected, the mosquitos were horrid. I wore protective gear clothing, gloves, and a head net and didn't get a single bite! Then I bushwhacked my way out of the area with a machete and walked back to my Jeep. The trek out was actually the worse part. Very dense and the ground was extremely saturated and mucky. Some areas had mud that acted almost like quicksand. I probably would have been better off going back upstream to the bridge.

According to SARTopo, it was about a 1.62 mile trek, then another mile or so back to the Jeep. The next section to do is up by the church and cemetery where the scent dog was tracking Larry and up to the retention pond I sonar mapped last week.

Earlier this week I drone searched a long marshy area along the South Buffalo Creek downstream from Sundays search. I did not see much debris in this area so it looks like anything floating down the creek stays within the banks of the creek.

Of all the crimes I’ve heard of, operating a nursing home without a license has got to be one of the more confusing ones. You would have so much time to think “maybe this is a bad idea”. I hope there’s restitution for this poor man’s family

From what I understand, operating a non-medical care home for the elderly where they are provided assistance with daily living activities does not require a license. It's when medical care is given that a license id required. I can see a home starting off as non-medical care slipping over time into the other. Does not in any way excuse the care home for not being licensed once medical care is given.

On Saturday, I conducted another search of the ditch leading from the Mt. Zion Church down to the South Buffalo Creek. This time from the mid point up to the church. The first search was from the midpoint down to South Buffalo Creek. I also searched a ditch from the pond I sonar mapped down to where it meets with this main ditch, just upstream of the midpoint.

Screenshot 2025-08-10 215240.webp

There was quite a bit to wade and climb through. It was a tougher search then the weekend prior.

1755046106267.webp
1755046146260.webp

During the search I found some clothing caught up on the roots of a fallen tree, a considerable way up from normal water level. A red scarf, a pair of blue sweatpants and a sock. I retrieved the sweatpants and the scarf but the socks were wedged in the roots and I did not want to tear them up removing them.

image (2).webp
image (3).webp
image (4).webp

The family told me they purchased new cloths for Mr. Burton that included a pair of blue sweatpants, size L, and the family member that purchased the clothes said that the brand JERZEES sounds familiar. She purchased the clothing at 2 close out stores. I checked both but did not find that brand for sale. Being a close out store, their stock varies greatly.

It's been widely reported that care home personnel last saw him around 10:30 pm and said he was wearing blue jeans and teal shirt. The family refutes this claim. Per the family, Mr. Burton does not own a pair of jeans and they told me at night he would wear sweatpants to bed. He was found missing the next morning and reported LE just after 7.

I reported my findings to my contact at LE. They are maintaining that Mr. Burton was wearing blue jeans and the teal shirt. I find this a bit short sighted knowing that no one at the home knows what time in the night that he left or actually saw him leave the home.

I will continue to search for Mr. Burton acknowledging the possibility that the sweatpants could indeed be his. Preparing to paddleboard and sonar a considerable length of the South Buffalo Creek.

Larry Burton is still missing and there have been no updates from local authorities.

It's been a few weeks since I was up in Greensboro searching for Larry. I pulled some muscles in my back during the last search wading and climbing through the drainage ditches so I had to take some time off from searching to mend. I will be back in Greensboro this weekend searching several miles of the South Buffalo Creek, picking up the search from where I was previously. I now have a new inflatable Skiff that I have set up for sonar searching that is lightweight and will help with this search.

Here is an update on my Search for Larry.

A couple weekends ago, I went to the South Buffalo Creek to see if I could put my Inflatable Skiff in the creek to search it. Unfortunately, the creek is way to shallow for my skiff or even for a paddleboard which was my first idea.

The only way to search the creek bed is on foot or by drone. My back is still giving me issues so walking/wading through miles of creek bed is out for me. I am searching the North Fork of the New River for another missing person, Steven LeCount, with a high end drone with Thermal and 112X zoom capabilities. I can just about read the label on a water bottle at 300ft. It is working out quite well and I have almost 10 miles of river searched so far.

After the leaves fall you can see much more of the creek bed. (See Below). I will do the same type of drone search on South Buffalo Creek at that time.
