Circumstances of Recovery: Partial skeleton uncovered on Long Beach on the afternoon of Friday, 05/14/1965. Request from the Long Beach Police Department to determine any useful information on the skeleton as to race, length of time since burial, etc. that would eliminate foul play. The skeleton was uncovered by a road machine while cutting new road on the west end of the beach, about four feet below ground level.

Without more information this could be anyone, including historical remains. Soldiers, sailors, shipwrecks, natives. A U-Boat was sunk about 20 miles south during WWII.

A mile down the shore from Long Beach there are still remnants of a Fort Caswell that was used during the Civil War, WWI, and WWII. The Baptist state convention took ownership of the fort after WWII (and still own it today) and by the 1960's people vacationed there regularly, as my great grandfather used to tell me stories about exploring old tunnels in the fort that are now closed.
Scant few houses in the late 50's/early 60's at Long beach. Southport was the nearest bit of civilization, and I'm not sure the ferry ran from there to Oak Island back then. Without the ferry, getting there from Southport was an 11 mile trip up the Supply Road to Long Beach Road.
