GUILTY NC - Maggie Daniels, 31, murdered in her Newton apartment, 27 June 2014

  • #241
So hard to bite my tongue and sit on my hands when the secrecy is seen as sinister. There can be reasons relationships are private that are not negative. Truly barking up the wrong bush if you knew why. So all I can do is ask to focus on something different in the case that may actually be productive and requote this reminder.

Nothing has changed since I posted this warning a few days ago but I still continue to see posts about MD's relationship. Family, friends and relationships are off limits and against TOS.

If it continues you might want to consider packing an overnight bag. :silenced:

It is a bad neighborhood. A club near the complex (not a very desirable one) as well as a house where the Outlaws club meet. NCHS isn't in a good area. But she wanted to be near the school.

All the more :shakehead: about leaving apt door unlocked...

Looking at the complex from Google Earth shows that those woods go pretty much directly to the high school, and specifically with easy access from the gym/athletic fields. I wonder if we're looking at a student/athlete here.

That has been my suspicion from the beginning and someone she knew who she'd allow into her apartment.

I may be wrong, but I thought the trail in the woods let to an elementary school.

From my post #12 in this thread:

It does sound weird but I read or saw a TV report that Maggie often left her door unlock so students could come into her apartment, but I can't find it now. It may have been well known that she did not lock her door. In this video it says a path from the school ends up through the woods and ends near her back door.

In this day and age what teacher would welcome students unchaperoned into their home? Leaving the door unlocked is problem enough but having students feel they can use her home as a refuge is asking for trouble in my opinion.

I wonder if this is actually true. I remember reading it in a news article but I can't remember who stated it?

The WSOC article is still at:

If you copy a copy of the link and it ends up with ... it won't work.

Assuming it is true that Maggie had a previous problem with a neighbor, even though that individual had moved out, it seems odd that she would continue to leave her door unlocked. I also question if she was mentoring male students in her apartment. That in itself could create a serious problem. Therefore, I am slightly skeptical if either of these things are absolutely true at the time of her death.

Just wondering if a reporter misconstrued someone's comment like: "Her door was always open to students that needed help..." and got interpreted that her door was always unlocked when really they were saying that she was always willing to talk to students...Still not a good idea to become too familiar with students, however...but maybe her door itself was not actually left unlocked all the time...Just a thought...

I don't see anything about it in that article. This article just has the janitor saying she tends to leave her door unlocked. Can't find the article where it states she left it unlocked to let students come by whenever. I wonder if it was misreported as well

There was one article or newscast that did say that, but it may not be available any more. I remember seeing it, but the article/ newscast may have been misleading.

There is an elementary school on the back end of the community, but I'm pretty sure that Maggie's apartment was on 17th Street on the left hand side at the end of the first section of units. This would make those 'denser' woods just south and west of the complex the area leading up to her back door. They lead more towards the high school/athletic fields than the elementary school. Here's a map of what I mean. Looking south of the red marker would be her apartment, IIRC.

https://www.google.com/maps/place/1...2!3m1!1s0x88513427c702c23d:0x112d8b9eca011aa1

Edit: Ugh. The map will only pick 199 17th Street as a marker, which is way past her apartment. Basically, if you turn left onto 17th from Main Ave, her apartment would be located in the first long unit to the left, and on the far end.

No offense to Maggie, but this is a really bad idea, Imo. Even if a student is not involved, word gets around in a small town or city. Bad guys could easily hear about the beautiful new teacher who leaves her apartment open for kids to come and go. I understand the desire to be available to the kids...but now she can't help anyone. :(

Could this statement " leaves her door unlocked" have been referring to her office at school?

Also, it bothers me that the janitor keeps being quoted as saying this. To me, he would be referring to her office door at school, not her apartment door.

Yes, the path through the wooded area behind Maggie's Apt. leads to Thornton Elementary School.

Here is the statement by the maintenance worker at the apartments, saying that Maggie left her door unlocked:

He said Daniels moved into the complex a little over a year ago, and he often saw her running outside, sometimes with friends. McCorkle says Daniels often left her door unlocked, something that’s not uncommon in the complex.

McCorkle said he thinks Daniels had a boyfriend who lives in South Carolina and visited her once or twice a month.

Read more here: http://www.charlotteobserver.com/20...ool-counselor.html#.U9XJvONdWSo#storylink=cpy

He said it's not uncommon, so there's a lot of conflicting information out there.

Also, he's the one who made a statement about the BF visiting 1-2x/month from SC. If even the janitor knows that information, then it's not a secret - just private (as someone here said, it wasn't something she discussed with her students). Two different things, IMO.

I put the yellow X on Maggie's apartment to show location of path behind her apartment.

100 W 17th St Newton, NC 28658

Actually, you know what, since you've clarified that that is her apartment it looks even more accessible from the athletic fields. She was a coach and a fan, so I bet many of her 'regulars' were student-athletes. I also wonder if this could've been a 'jealousy' killing by a female who thought she was 'too close to my man' or some other teen BS.
