NC - Melvin Levine, renowned pediatrician and pedophile*found deceased*

I highly suggest that anyone interested in this case read Mercyneal's link above. The victims feel robbed and that makes perfect sense to me. Levine actually took the "easy way out". He set up a scenario where he never had to confront his abusers.

He quite simply destroyed lives, enjoyed the façade of normality, and then excused himself from the party.

Beautifully put, Missizzy.

I applaud these brave men. They are the true heroes in this story.

Any purveyor of books with the slightest sence of decency should sell Levine's writings with a caveat. JMVHO.

I would like to know more about Dr Johnson and if it is her real name. Just out of curiousity.

Believe: I believe that is Johnson's real name. What will she complain about now that the victims have broken their anonymity?

I, too applaud these brave victims for speaking up. Contrast their heroic actions to Levine's cowardice.

And yet columnists still insist on writing about the good that Levine has done. Will any of them change their mind after reading the devastating Globe piece today?

Believe09: Here's an excerpt from the New York Times today about what some of Levine's colleagues thought of his work:

While some experts criticized Dr. Levine’s work as depending on observation and anecdote instead of replicable scientific investigation, teachers and parents flocked to his entertaining, multihour lectures.

What a way to soft pedal the "fact" that Mel Levine's work was based on nothing more than stories...there was no scientific basis. But he was an energizing speaker...I can think of many people who give entertaining lectures...Anyone watch Real Housewives of Atlanta? Housewife named Sheree dated someone that was nicknamed the "Love Doctor." He advocated for clear, defined roles between men and women.

Dude was a phony-no license, no graduate degree, no degree whatsoever. Just a line of patter and rooms full of people who bought it hook line and sinker.

It amazes me in this day and age what people will take on faith. Now I read that our special education curriculum is emeshed with Levine's "work." It makes me ill. The fruit of the poisoned tree...I mean, doesnt anyone get it? He sexually molested little boys...defenseless little boys. And when he was going to be forced to face the music, he allegedly put a bullet in his brain.

the whole mess is horrifying.

First, does it surprise anyone else that Levine even had a gun? For some reason it doesn't fit the picture I have of him...with his exotic birds and fancy dinner parties. I think he fancied himself the "gentleman of the estate". Just a bit curious.

I've also wondered what was done concerning Gajdusek's work when his proclivities were made known. I've yet to read much at all about his many "adopted" sons who supposedly went on to great success. He studied the disease kuru, and I believe his work was groundbreaking. He just had to spoil it all and take a little sidetrack over towards pedophilia along the way.

Lastly, I sent an email to our high school's vice principal and the director of special ed. I wanted to make certain that they are aware of these issues so they can check their libraries. I think it's an excellent idea to place a caveat inside the cover of his books. I suggested that in my email.

As a mother of a number of different learners, I would have to agree that Levine's communication with parents was his strongest suit. His anecdotes and light-hearted way of approaching learning were enticing. Isn't that strange as it seems not to fit the man who has been unmasked. But if you ever get a chance to look at his books or even read some of his articles on the web, you'll see what I mean. Please remember that his words of encouragement came in a dark time. Educators were giving up on "crack babies", those with MBD (minimal brain damage), and children who were on the spectrum. Just the very phrase "different learner" gave us hope.

But that was then and this is now. The veil has been parted and his work is forever tainted, in my eyes.

If anyone reads this thread who has a connection with special ed or even has the time to talk to the local librarian, I feel it's worth a heads up.

Someone who claims he was a "patient" of Levine's insults Levine's victims on this blog.

One of his victims responds:

How lucky for you that you weren't molested by Dr Levine. I wasn't so lucky and his molestation of me has left deep scars on my emotions so that even today I can't show affection even to those I love without a sense of fear. Dr Levine was a probably a sociopath and he never once addressed his behavior or the results of his actions, not in this lawsuit or the FOUR previous ones. There may be as many as 4000 victims of his abuse. He shot himself most likely because this time he realized the jig was up, he was going to have to pay for what he did.

We know and I wish the general public understood that most pedophiles are very discriminating when choosing victims. Either this child didn't interest him or he saw the risk too great. I also believe that pedophiles "play bargaining games" with themselves. They'll treat 20 children and only abuse one. I truly think that much of it is a game for them.

How many rapists of adult victims are model husbands and fathers? Family members are often shocked. It doesn't surprise me at all that Levine treated some--even many--children appropriately. I'm still surprised that he had no children. I would have guessed that if the couple were infertile, they would have adopted.....little boys.

One thing that been bothering me greatly is Levine's interest in exotic birds. Two pedophiles that I know of, also share that interest.

Who would they be?

I hope any validation you have received in this tragedy helps with those wounds. This statement makes me impossibly sad.

Levine writes in the journals that even his own lawyer thought that he would be going to jail.

  • #74
Well I guess he thought he was a martyr. I guess that is how someone who commits the crimes he committed can get through the day.

I dont want to waste any more time on him unless his revelations lead to files at Children's Hospital that uncover more victims who can now be reached while they might still have some quality of life.

Personally, I think Oprah is obligated to bring on victims of Levine's and give them a voice. She should take the time to debunk a man she helped build up.

"Comeback Kid" ? Who is he fooling?

  • #76
Comeback kid? Huh? The North Carolina Medical Board forced him to give up his license.

Jack Hirose Associates, his booking agency turned him loose.

He lost all of his speaking engagements except in far-flung places in Europe, where people hadn't heard about the molestation charges.

The Board of All Kinds of Minds foundation kicked him out.

He had to shut down his own website.

This suicide note makes me very, very angry. May he rot in hell.

Deep Sounding has always given back to his fellow victims, but he out did himself with his commentary. Nothing more needs to be said.

The Boston Globe reports that Levine shot himself with a shotgun with a bullet to the head. And in this story, many victims break their anonymity and give shocking details of the abuse- including one firefighter who recounts that Levine took him to bed when he was ten years old.

Bumping for readers who believe Levine's contributions far outweighed his "failures."
