A week after he went out for a short errand, family and friends are worried that Michael Bowes of Henderson may have been the victim of foul play. They gathered in the cold Friday morning to begin searching from the last place where his cellphone pinged a tower, in Warren County near the state line.

"We’re going to keep searching until dark, until we can’t see anyway," said Donna Ayscue.

Bowes, an assistant manager and driver for Domino's, told his wife that he had his cellphone stolen while at a Christmas party and got a call in the wee hours of Dec. 21 that it had been found.

"They wanted to go to bed, but he told them, 'No. I’m coming straight there. I want my phone. I need it. I’m on the way ASAP,'" Katherine Bowes said. "He hollered in the other room and tells me, 'I’m going to get my phone somebody’s found it. I’ll be straight back.'"

Freinds and family said46-year-old Michael Bowes, of Henderson, was last seen on Dec. 21 around 2:30 a.m.

According to the man's Facebook page, he claims he was robbed the night before he went missing.

Authorities believe Bowes left on his own accord.

He drives a 2017 Silver in color Kia Soul, license plate EBS-5850.

She remembers urging him to be careful. He had been drinking earlier that evening, she said.

The couple exchanged 'I love yous' and he was gone.

"And that’s the last time I seen him or heard from him," Katherine Bowes said.

She is worried that her husband, who is diabetic and has high cholesterol, is without his medication. And she is leaning on her faith that he will be found safe and sound.

"I do go to church, so I’m keeping the faith as much as I can. God is keeping me strong through this," Katherine Bowes said.

"And we have two small kids. So I’m just trying to really stay strong for them, too."

Ayscue said frustration led her to form the search party.
"He’s been missing a week yesterday and nobody’s doing anything about it," she said. "So, I decided to get all these people together – his brother, his uncle, his friends – and get them all together so we can form a search to see if we can find him, find his car, get some kind of clues where he’s at."

Michael Bowes, 46, of Henderson, was found shot to death inside of his car at about 1 p.m. Sunday on a private farm on Washout Road, Sheriff Peter White said in a press release. He was reported missing on Dec. 21.

John Jefferson, 23, and Tynetta Mayfield, 17, both of Henderson, were charged with first-degree murder.

White said the motive for the killing was robbery, and that the suspects and Bowes had met in the past.

Jefferson and Mayfield were both being held in the Vance County Jail without bond. The pair is due in court on Feb. 26.

More charges are possible in the case, the sheriff said.

I think this explanation from Michael Bowes' wife tells us how this senseless murder happened:

. . .Katherine Bowes says her husband told her he couldn't find his cellphone after he was robbed in mid-December. He then posted about it on Facebook, offering a cash reward for help. Bowes says someone called saying they had his missing phone.

It said "Are you the one who lost his phone?" and he said "yes, you have my phone."

Katherine says Michael left in the middle of the night to meet the caller, but never returned home. . . .
