NC NC - Miles McCarthy, 34, Winston Salem, last seen near Belews Lake, 27 Feb 2025

When I conduct an investigation, I theorize each of the 4 possible outcomes. Accident, Self-Harm, Cognitive Impairment (Dementia/Alzheimer's), and Foul-Play. Each one of these affect how a search is conducted. In this case, we can skip Cognitive Impairment.

Belews Lake.
This lake can get quite deep. According to my Garmin Lake Maps, just off of Piney Bluff Boat Launch the depth is 45ft. Going north of the Belews Creek bridge the depth steadily increases to 65ft at the first bend, 85ft at the second bend, 105ft at the third bend, and 145ft where the lake intersects another branch. This is the deepest of the entire lake. It's like a deep hole at the 145ft area. The lake south of the boat launch gets very shallow in a short distance. About 5ft.

This will be a difficult lake to search even with sonar.

Looking at the photo released with Miles on an inflatable paddleboard, safety appears to be a priority. A Personal Floatation Device (PFD) is being worn and the dog appears to have a PFD as well. You normally paddleboard close to shore. If Miles fell off the paddleboard and slipped out of the PFD, or was not wearing it, the paddleboard would still be left on the surface. From what I can determine, no sign of her on the water has been found. I think an accident is unlikely.

Self-Harm. (Please Be Respectful. This may be an emotional point of discussion for some. Let's leave politics out.)
There are a number of things that indicate to me that self-harm is a strong possibility. From the name change information previously posted, it would appear that Miles is Transgender. Given the current political environment, it is an emotionally difficult time for transgender people. Transgender people are also a high risk category for self-harm.

More than 40% of transgender adults in the US have attempted suicide

Miles NC drivers license is probably under the prior name of "Mia Caroline McCarthy". When pulled over, Miles appears to have given the changed name, "Miles Austin McCarthy", which is probably not in the NC drivers database. Thus, the citation for "No Operators License". It may be that Miles never changed the license information since, I believe, NC will only recognize birth certificate gender.

Miles did not have the dog at the time. As I have mentioned in my timeline post, the dog was probably left at the mothers house prior to going to Belews Lake.

The way the shoes were left leaned up against the driver side front tire may be a farewell statement.

One could paddle to a deep section of lake and let the air out of the inflatable paddleboard.

Foul-Play.

At this time, given what is publicly known, I do not think there is an element of foul-play.

I am making preparations to go to Belews Lake tomorrow. With as deep as the water gets, Sidescan sonar may be difficult to see objects at these depths. I have the latest Garmin Livescope multi-scan sonar that would be more beneficial. My ROV's can go to a depth of over 300ft.
This is something I had to research but it appears in North Carolina, a court order for a gender change is NOT required to change driver's license or birth certificate information. It is also not required by the Social Security Administration. Both will accept a gender designation form signed by a licensed health care professional. LibGuides: Guide to Changing Your Legal Name and/or Gender in North Carolina: Changing Your Legal Gender

Changing the drivers license needed to be done right after the name change however. Official NCDMV: Name Changes.

Just my opinion, the the shoes looked staged. .. not a farewell. But I could also it be perceived that way, they weren't just left casually, for whatever reason.

I spoke with a local fire station chief involved with the search this past week and, from his account, the search has been very thorough. For example, an underwater towed sonar called Towfish was used due to the depth of the lake. Raw sonar data was recorded and sent to be evaluated by one of the best sonar search instructors here in NC, whom also taught myself and my search partner quite a bit last year when we attended his aquatic search course. Cross pattern search techniques were also used as well as live sonar. They also had an underwater ROV that was used to assess a number on "anomalies".

Searching these lakes, which are actually reservoirs, is very difficult. Especially when they are deep, such as Belews Lake. These lakes used to be forests until damns were built and the reservoirs filled with water. Much of the forests tree trunks and debris deep down in Belews Lake still exist 50 years after the creation of the reservoir in 1973. This, as I have mentioned, makes the search very difficult. The search is still on going but they may suspend efforts in the next few days. There is still no direct evidence, other then her car and shoes found at the boat ramp, that Miles is in the lake.

Heartbreaking - Mile's is deeply loved and cherished.

I was at Piney Bluff Boat Ramp today. Met with the officer in charge and offered my assistance in searching. They had 2 boats and a K-9 HRD dog out this morning. They were bringing a dive team in to search some areas of interest when I was heading out. They are putting a huge effort into this search.

I have talked with Miles mother today. They were unable to find Miles and the search has been officially suspended. I am planning several days of searching on my own this coming week. I roughly know the area of interest. Please keep Miles and her family in your thoughts and prayers.

I was able to get approval from Belle Collina Events, the mansion in the background, to operate drones from their property. They have been very helpful and supportive.

I spent several hours flying today, scanning shoreline and crossing over Belews Lake, which is very clear. While I was flying, I saw Belews Creek Fire & Rescue out on the lake searching as well. They came by where I was operating a drone, circled in green, and we shared search and contact info. They have been out every day and will continue to search for the foreseeable future, weather permitting. NC Wildlife is also still conducting searches.

This information just hit the news so I can now post about Miles being found.

I received a call from the Chief of Belews Creek Fire Rescue this morning. He said they located Miles in a deep part of a cove. This is an area of interest I had marked in my search log/plan that I gave them yesterday afternoon, and I planned to search tomorrow. I would like to think in some small way I helped guide them to Miles location. The important thing is that Miles has been found and will be returned to her family. Please keep Miles and her family in your thoughts and prayers.
