NC - Veronica Lee Baker, 17, fatally shot in parked car outside restaurant, Raleigh, 15 Aug 2020

Interview with Veronica’s parents. They believe she was robbed.

Parents of murdered 17-year-old plead for information in case :: WRAL.com

If so, for what 20 or 30 bucks? She may well have had no cash on her. I've seen a lot of teens who buy a burger/soda and charge $2.75 (or even less) on a credit card. If this is so, then I would think the shooter would be someone about her age, or some addict needing a fix, either one thinking that she'd be an easy target, and got rattled/angry when she said she said she didn't have any money.

Thanks for opening this thread, @steeltowngirl -- I live in Raleigh, NC, and I saw/read this on the local news, but I wasn't able to start a thread at the time. SMH.
This shouldn't have happened to a 17 year old young woman. Oh, her poor family -- she was there one day and not there the next.
Just dammit.

Sure thing @borndem. I have no ties to Raleigh, but it is a relatable town to my Pittsburgh, with its livability and revitalization. I just like Raleigh. I’m sorry that this tragic story is unfolding in your hometown.

Hope they get answers, and justice. Though that won’t bring this young lady back, of course.

Thanks, @steeltowngirl.
Glad to hear you like Raleigh -- lotsa good things here, but it's certainly not perfect(!).
A friend of mine knows her folks -- she and her family didn't live near the Bojangles.
Maybe she and her friends had gone downtown -- they may have been celebrating going off to college or to other new things. The Bojangles might have been on the way to Veronica's home -- or maybe she dropped off a friend in that area. And her poor little friends who had been with her... Can you imagine how they must feel?
Feelings can go so, so deep with teens -- and it was surely their first brush with losing a good friend. And it was not to sickness or an auto accident -- that would be bad enuff for them to endure. But this was murder, and she was 17 years old.
Dammit.

I was just looking at the local media there in Raleigh hoping for an update. I hope they have a good image of whoever done this on the video.

I wonder if something went on with her friends on that outing. I don't know if 7pm was unusual to go home, but it may be.

I kind of figured a young person going home at that time would be getting ready to go out. 11 pm is only late to us middle age folks.

Haha! When you are as old as I am, 7pm is a late night, but it certainly wasn't when I was 17.

17-year-old arrested in killing of Garner teen; three others charged with accessory :: WRAL.com

Senseless. May Veronica rest in peace. I'm hopeful justice will be served now that the suspects have all been arrested.

The three already in custody are all charged with “accessory after the fact” which suggests that the juvenile is the actual murderer? Two of these three individuals had prior arrests for a variety of crimes, none of which appear to have been anywhere near as serious offenses as murder.

Police said Devin Cordell Jones, 17, is accused of killing Baker Saturday night and the others -- Keyshara Michelle Deans, 19, Nezyiha Zamir Collins, 19, and Tyreek Qumay Rogers, 18 -- were charged with felony accessory for helping Jones.

Did she know these people or was it random?

The way I'm understanding it is the juvenile is the suspected murderer. I hope the accessory charges stick. MOO

It seems like a lot of these crimes involving teen girls 15-18 are domestic in nature. Yet nothing is being discussed or speculated about at this time. My suspicions are the DA will use the Accessory after the fact as leverage to get them to rat out the 17-year-old suspected gunman. I live in Wake County and my radar always goes up over these types of cases. Maybe more information will be more forthcoming once the autopsy results are revealed or if they are to be revealed. If it turns out that the suspected gunman is convicted of Veronica Baker's death another young life will be wasted the first one was Veronica's.

One of the sources I read said that she was always trying to help people who had difficulties in life. She had plan to major in Social Work.

Well, according to his home address he does not technically live in her school district.
However, his prior arrest for larceny lists the physical address for Garner High, which is where she graduated from. So, there is that. They may have known each other.

How are these kids getting guns? They obviously think they are big time gangsters when they have a gun. How are they going to fit all these kids into the prisons? They must be overflowing.

No words other than I am glad they are behind bars.
She was a seventeen- year-old young woman with plans and dreams. And in a flash she is just gone. Gone.

Excellent work by LE - but a truly senseless taking of a life that seemed to promise so much....sigh

bbm

My guess is that it was a totally random crime by a youth who happened by and decided he wanted her car or her money, and he panicked -- or perhaps he just wanted to act like a big, bad, guy.
Senseless and irreparable.
