"It's uh, hard to comprehend," said Eddie Garner, a neighbor who lives a few doors down from where crime investigators were documenting every inch of the unthinkable.

Garner was there as the victim's husband arrived home Monday afternoon to the devastating scene.

"I don't know what they told him," Garner said. "I mean, we just heard him crying and you could hear him all over the place. I mean he definitely never expected something like this to happen."

Funes Machada made a first court appearance Tuesday where he was ordered held without bond.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, North Carolina (WTVD) -- The Franklin County District Attorney said Tuesday that 18-year-old Oliver Mauricio Funes Machada will be moved to Central Prison because it's "more appropriate for any special needs he may have."

At a a preliminary hearing Tuesday, both the prosecution and defense said they expect mental health to be an issue in the case. According to court documents, Machada took four different medications for psychosis and schizophrenia.

ZEBULON, N.C. -- The North Carolina teenager accused of beheading his mother Monday afternoon told dispatchers he killed the woman “because I felt like it,” according to an investigator’s affidavit obtained by CBS affiliate WNCN.
The 18-year-old also told a dispatcher that “he stabbed her ‘like eight times’ and left the knife in her mouth,” according to the sworn statement by Det. A.R. Roberts of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, reports the station. The first deputy to respond to the suburban Raleigh home found the teen walking outside carrying a knife in one hand*and a severed head in the other, documents say.

....Funes Machada’s public defender, Louisburg attorney C. Boyd Sturges III, said in a phone interview that he spoke with Funes Machada for an hour in the Franklin County jail.

“It does appear there’s some substantial mental health issues involved in this case,” Sturges said. “I’m not a doctor, so I can’t really elaborate. He’s a pretty profoundly disturbed young man in a mental health kind of way.”

On 22 October 2018 Oliver Mauricio Funes Machada was found not guilty by reason of insanity for the murder of his mother Yesenia Funez Beatriz Machado in 2017. He was committed to hospital for mental health treatment.
