What I read yesterday is that she was last seen in her bed at 2am. They didn't report her missing until 2pm. http://www2.hickoryrecord.com/news/2010/oct/10/7/amber-alert-missing-hickory-girl-ar-447658/

You must of lived out toward Grace Chapel or on the other side of 321 past MDI but before the bridge?

Yes, exactly....very near MDI....on Mountainside Drive which fronts Grace Chapel. Mountainside takes you straight down to Lake Hickory. My fear is this SM access to such a large body of water. If the Dad last saw her on Thursday evening and she wasn't discovered missing until Saturday afternoon, then we have a large window of time when only the SM could account for the girl's whereabouts.

Perhaps she was hoping that Zahra's dad would check her room and find her missing...and when he didn't ever check in on her, SM decided to run out of the house on Saturday afternoon, screaming about Zahra being gone.

kcsmom, agree with everything you have said thus far, especially about moving to Hickory likely being more expensive, particularly in the Viewmont area where they live. Working on a map for you all now.

She has two daughters and a son from a previous marriage. The mother and son don't have much of a relationship, the man said, after he stayed with his father when they divorced. The daughters went to live with their mother.
Still, 22-year-old Douglas Proctor said he had spoken to investigators about his mother and was dismayed over news of the case.
"It's not something that you want to open up a paper and see," he said, adding he'd met Zahra only once.

Thanks for the info and link, tehcloser......but part of the article didn't make sense to me. If she has 2 daughters from a previous marriage, then how could they go live "with their mother?" She is the mother. Just wondering about that....

Ten-year-old Zahra Baker was all smiles as she was fitted with her device.

Baker lost her hearing during chemotherapy treatments for two bouts of cancer.

According to her mother, Elesa, Baker suffers from what is known as high frequency hearing loss. As such, she has a difficult time hearing "s" and "f" sounds.

A hearing resource teacher at Baker's school in Hudson, N.C. mentioned the Speedway Children's Charity giveaway to Elesa, who jumped at the chance to help her daughter regain her normal hearing.

"She said this would be a wonderful opportunity to open up other opportunities," Elesa said.

Elesa, who fought back tears as volunteers walked her daughter through how to use the new hearing device, said she looked forward to the opportunities the gift will bring Zahra - opportunities to better understand her teachers and friends at school, and better communicate with her family.

As Baker was being fitting for the hearing aid, NASCAR legend Richard Petty stood nearby.

Where is over here?
We did have some rain a few weeks ago but we are STILL in a drought.

Lol, much more southeast of Catawba County. It was dry all summer, then we had a bunch of rain, now dry again.

[See line bolded above] Yes, I think it is quite odd that no one went to check on her after noticing a brush fire in the back yard. I would have checked to make sure my stepdaughter or daughter was alright, that she wasn't the one who started it :o), or to make sure no smoke got into her room (especially with her health conditions). VERY ODD. I also have a bad feeling about this one.

This little girl deserves to be home in her warm bed. After all she has been through- battling cancer, loosing her hearing... it isn't fair that she has to deal with anymore.

I wish her home and safe.

Just watched the video with her daddy and the end broke my heart. :(

so, from the hearing aid article from last May we know that her hearing resource teacher was the one that told them about the event so she was in school last year.

Just throwing this out there... but what if SM didn't enroll her in school when they moved and it caused some sort of conflict???? What if Zahra didn't want to be homeschooled?

just thoughts

ETA: About 1PM step-mom came out screaming that Zahra was missing. Bio dad spent about 1 - 1 1/2 hours looking for Zahra before reporting to LE.

I have semi kept up with this case.

When I read there was a fire my first thought was "there are no coincidences in crimes"

I sincerely hope she is alive somewhere and was taken by someone who loves her for her own good. I just feel that isn't the case.

Yes, Yes, YES, Penelope!

Couldn't believe my ears when Dad said he went back to bed without checking on little Zahra first!

The fact that the stepmother has such a distant relationship with her own son troubles me, too.

So step-mom could have done this Thursday or Friday and he wouldn't know?

I'm not sure to be honest because I'm not sure what dogs they brought out. I can call and see. I suspect, unfortunately, that she was carried out of the house at some point.

I saw reported that Zahra is 5'1" and 85 lbs. My 8 yo DD is nowhere near that large and I can barely carry her when she is hanging on. I don't think a woman could carry her.
