I just ran some basic demographics on Hickory because I'm not real familiar with the area. I find it interesting to note that it's nearly HALF rental properties. The graduation rate is 79% with only 28% of graduates attaining higher education. Close to 15% below the poverty level with a per capita income of $23k.

Run the stats on Caldwell County; it's likely bleaker. I think my high school had nearly a 50% dropout rate. Sad.

Hickory and the surrounding area has been going through some tough economic times, even before the recession began. Our main exports are/were furniture and fiber-optics. With the push to send production overseas, a lot of folks who had been working in production their whole lives have found themselves without jobs and without the skills necessary to begin new careers. It's tough. We have the highest unemployment in the state and one of the highest rates in the country.

However, and I'm saying this without having any real numbers in front of me, I think violent crime is relatively low for an area plagued with so much poverty. I would definitely agree with the assessment of domestic violence though.

Not sure how to feel about that. It would be wonderful for her to be found and finally have justice, but I guess on some level there is still hope until proof otherwise. Need coffee.

I do have a bad feeling about today, though. Bumpy ride and all that.

Elisa Baker remained jailed on those charges Thursday. Her bail has been set at a combined $70,000, an amount her lawyer called "excessive." Police said Adam Baker also faces bad-check charges, but is not being arrested while he assists police.

"At this point, he's doing what we ask him to do. If we need him to do something, he shows up," said Clyde Deal, Hickory's deputy police chief. Deal said other searches have been conducted, but the warrants have been sealed and no details are being released.

Respectfully snipped--essies, way back in a previous thread, Dear Prudence caught this too. "...that's pretty much the whole 100% of what I completely know so far..." (1:45), "100% genuinely saw my daughter out of bed would have been Tuesday" (right about 2:00). As DP pointed out, this is the kind of over-assertion and use of qualifiers (saw her "out of bed?") that we see when people are lying.

Back to frantically catching up. The thread never sleeps, but I had to... Was hoping for a Zahra dream but didn't get anything clear. rayer:

ITA. A lot of people in the Casey case talked like that all the time, adding in percentages like that. Talk about annoying! Like adding a percentage makes it better somehow!

*sigh* I had to take a break last night. I'm still sad this morning, and I hope they find her today. My heart is just torn up about this case. And reading about those schoolkids missing her just made it worse. How do you explain this to kids her age that her knew her? I feel so bad for them, poor kids!

God, please guide your angels to where she is and have them protect her. Please help LE find her today to give her rest and peace. And may she find her way back to her homeland of Australia, the only place she ever had any happiness.

I just feel sick and sad. I'm actually going to work now to distract myself.
