Just to add on to this that nothing is covered 100% with employer-provided insurance plans. There's a deductible, only a percentage that's covered, and a maximum per year. :( MOO

I don't think that's true. It depends on your plan. We had a wonderful 100% plan with a previous employer. We never paid a dime.

This reminded me, before my brain totally fizzles for the night, has it been said anywhere whether or not the furniture store had surveillance cameras that may have captured them inside the store or at the very least the parking lot?

Last I recall having heard was just a visual ID from some of the employees.

"Employees called police and a statement was taken. The store has surveillance video but it was not turned on at the time."

Oh that's so unfair....I just don't know how people cope without insurance in the states. I hope things improve soon x x x
I am back at school and I think things will be fine! My kids have it so I am happy.

New article about the Baker's charges and financial problems ......

Money and legal trouble follow Zahra's parents
http://www2.hickoryrecord.com/news/...egal-trouble-follow-zahras-parents-ar-462500/

"the couple is facing a combined total of 18 charges of writing bad checks worth a combined $2,054.58. All but one of the checks were written at area grocery stores. "

I wish they were more specific in who (EB or AB ) has what charges specifically.

True...and if you have insurance, they still charge out the butt 'cause they know they have to adjust some in the end....the insured is still hung for it though especially if you have not met your deductible yet....hubby had right colon removed and hospital alone was over 85,000.00. sickening.

Wowee. I can't believe how good we have it here. Private Health Insurance is certainly encouraged, if you report a taxable income of over $70K per year and don't have it (that's generally for families), you incur a Medicare Levy surcharge at the end of financial year (when you lodge your tax return), I think it's about 4 percent of your taxable income.

It's quite obvious that AB probably didn't enjoy the lifestyle he would have in Australia.

Remind to me never complain again about our medical system here.

They did have cameras and of course they were NOT working at that time.

:(

Thank you.

*Sigh* I would say how surprised I am by this, but I would be lying.

Sadly inoperable cameras seems to be the norm with these type of cases.

I should have said "most plans".....my error. :)

Irregardless of which one of them wrote the checks, this seems to be the answer to their grocery shopping expense and how much money they did or didn't have. MOO

Reading all these US healthcare payment stories is frightening! There are even doctors here in Oz who "bulk bill" - ie, they take the government reimbursement only, and the patient doesn't pay a cent. My doctor does it sometimes when I complain about the wait time in her office! We do NOT want to go down the path of the US system.

ETA: I also have private health insurance, which I need for glasses, dental, podiatry, etc... Mine is quite expensive but it's still "only" about $130/month. (Aust dollars, but seeing as we reached parity with the US maybe not much difference thesedays.)

Did they say the actual date of the last sighting at the furniture store, I may have missed it...

Non-profit organization sets up Zahra Baker Fund
Oct 16, 2010 9:47 PM CDT

HICKORY, NC (WBTV) - A non-profit organization sets up a fund for missing 10-year-old Zahra Baker.

Spiritual Counseling Network of Hickory has several purposes in mind for the fund. One, to assist law enforcement and provide money for a possible reward. Two, to provide resources to the community. Third, to take care of funeral expenses in the event of Zahra's death and lastly to assist agencies involved in the prevention of child abuse and neglect.

Adam's charges are only for the bad checks. I am guessing it was a joint account.

Adam Baker also faces bad check charges, but he has not been arrested due to his cooperation with the police.

He does have several outstanding warrants for bad checks. We asked Hickory Police Chief Tom Adkins why those warrants weren't served on Mark Baker as they were served on Elisa Baker. The Chief said they would handle those when the time was appropriate.

Just delurking with a few thoughts that popped into mind...

I am shocked at how much medical care costs in the US! :O I am extremely grateful that where I live it (Ontario, Canada) is free, or I don't know what we'd do!!! Not trying to rub it in at all- just shocked at reality outside my area! For all we know, maybe they wanted to make fake id/passports to come to Canada.

As for Z's dad- likely making minimum wage, but probably supplemented by SM selling drugs? Anyway, they probably moved so much partly because of all the bad rent & food checks, if what money they had was going for drugs.

About previous mention of a possible 'mercy' killing cover-up...I find it highly unlikely that 'mercy' is a quality known to the sadistic SM.

Another thing that is noticeable about Z's clothes- nothing girly at all that I've noticed. All seems to be totally SM's taste. Aside from the one pic of Z at the wedding in the pretty red dress- everything I've seen her in since has been dark and not like what most girls her age would wear, as if she had no control or choice whatsoever what she was allowed to wear. My own daughter her age and her friends all are very particular about what they want to wear, and mostly all at least some girly styles.

I can tell exactly what was happening- the money coming into the family was not enough to pay rent (thus the many moves) utilities and other day to day needs, food and the DRUGS-
So they write a check to get food- it is possible that these checks were bounced checks and not fraudulent checks. Which kind of makes a difference I guess when it comes to actual criminal charges.

Again tonight, prayers for LE to find Zahra. :prayer:

Have a good night everyone!

Thanks for the link. Exactly why I have been trying to sleuth their finances.

It's quite obvious there was probably quite a bit of stress in the home. Bouncing cheques for groceries is evidence of desperation IMO. I wonder how well fed little Zahra was???

I read one link today that stated that the store did have security cameras- but they weren't turned on :(
