But do we actually know when the car "disappeared"? "Around the same time" could mean a lot of things. I think we need more info. before we start jumping to conclusions about the car.

As short as it seems they were on money, they could have sold or pawned the car. That SHOULD be easy enough to scratch off the list pretty quickly once they check into it.
