If,as I fear,Zahra has been missing for a long time,WHY announce that she is missing NOW?? What made it important for LE to know now?

I've wondered this as well peg. Maybe DSS was planning a home visit if indeed relatives had contacted the agency as has been reported in some news media.

I also wonder if the school system contacts DSS when a child has been withdrawn from school. I just don't know.

Poor sweet little Zahra.....she was failed by many. I pray that she is found today!

I have been lurking for a while waiting for my account to be validated.
Let me just start by saying that I live very close to this home. Within half a mile. The fact that something like this happened right around the corner from my own home is chilling to me.
I went to high school with the step-mothers biological son and I know the daughter Brittany through acquaintance. They have both made via facebook indicating that their own mother is the culprit and that she "needs to talk" and let police know where to find Zahra.
After watching the news coverage on Nancy Grace last night, I drove down to the home. When I drove down 21st avenue.. there was no activity at the home. i drove the length of the road which becomes very wooded near the end. Past the home the Baker's lived in are VERY nice upscale expensive homes. I would venture a guess that the home they lived in is one of the least expensive ones on the street.
When I turned around and drove back down the street, there were 3 police cruisers in the yard and 1 K-9 SUV. I would speculate that they were gathering more evidence or something based on the equipment that I saw in the back of the SUV.
I expect there to be more news today. I am sad to say that I don't think this will turn out well.

We have to know that if Zahra has been missing for a week or more, then her father knows more than he is saying at this point. He says he last saw her on Thursday evening....but police say they have no one other than these parents that can confirm seeing her for several weeks.

As I stated last night, the most telling thing I have seen was while watching the father and police chief on television yesterday morning. When dad broke down at the end of the interview and started to weep, the chief did not even reach over to comfort him in any way. He watched him closely but didn't reach out at all. That body language shows me that cops think he is guilty of something, even if its knowledge of what really happened.

Did Zahra get SSI?

Im not sure how that works on immigrants... umm and if she did.. its a nice lump of money per month for drug use...

if they were poor enough to qualify etc.
also NC SSI reciepents get Medicaid thru the State..


I for one have never paid one dime for my daughter since she was born.
4 holes in her heart .. surgery to correct that at Duke..

Surgery on her ears as one was flapped over and then the Down syndrome.. so medicaid pays for ALL DRs and meds and services i get like my respite etc since i found out i was pregnant..

Brittany Bentley, who was married to Elisa's nephew, said her heart dropped when she heard Zahra was missing. "I knew this day was going to come. Everybody that knew Zahra knew how she was being treated. This was going to happen," she said.

Bentley is no friend of the family. She says she filed the charges for "communicating threats" that Elisa Baker is now in jail for. Bentley says those charges stemmed from an argument during which she says Baker threatened to kill her, her husband, and their child.

This woman was on one of the morning shows...CBS I think. I was soooo upset when she said we all knew this day would come. She had an awful homelife...her stepmother locked her in her room and let her out for an hour a day. She beat her for minor things. The father never did but also did not interfere when the sm did. The interviewer said was this reported and she replied yes and they went out there but we don't know what came of it.

Excuse me?? It's not like a gray area where a toddler is being spanked and you don't approve...locked in her room? Beaten? I would stay on CPS over and over and over until I was sure something was done...especially if this woman had already made death threats to people. WTH. She said Zahra would spend the weekends and was loving and happy til she had to go back and then got angry...this is how my daughter is when she has to go for her every other weekend visit to her verbally abusive father. A 10-year-old disabled girl who moved to the US with her Australian father has gone missing and her American stepmother has been named as a "person of interest", police say.

Zahra Baker, who is hearing impaired and has lost a leg to bone cancer, was reported missing on Saturday from her home in Hickory, North Carolina.

Her father, Adam Baker, is from Australia and moved to the US after meeting his current wife, Elisa Baker, on the internet, a former neighbour, Brandy Stapleton of Lenoir, told the Hickory Record newspaper.

I hate this story. The AP is reporting cadaver dogs hit on both cars and that clothing was found in the burn pile out back. AND there are no independent sitings of her for WEEKS. Which means if this unfolds in a criminal fashion, he is culpable as well.

AND, fwiw, who spanks a child with this kind of medical history?????

As the evidence mounts, it seems to be pointing to the stepmother as a guilty party in this young girl's disappearance. As a step-mother myself, I want to say that women like SM continue to perpetuate the ideal of the "evil stepmother" and thus continue to smear the reputations of the many, many stepmothers who treat their stepchildren as their own -- with the utmost kindness, caring and love. It's woman like SM who make our "jobs" a lot harder. SHAME ON HER. If she is guilty, she deserves the maximum punishment.
