If you google NC DSS failures, a ton of stories of deaths by child abuse come up. Child abuse that was reported and the children were left in the home. Then, the children come up missing, dead.
NC DSS is broken.

Wow are they in deep doodoo - two kids deaths in less than a year? Some heads are going to be rolling...

I'd be willing to bet there are more than 2. JMO

I feel so helpless. Something has to be done to save our children from abuse.

Have a (soft) commercial shown on lets say a cartoon network where children learn that they can call if they are being abused. That they can get help right away by just calling 911.

Ok presser at 1130 ......TY

I agree.

But in Shaniya's case, the father knew where he was sending Shaniya.

BTW, there is also a case archive album for Shaniya, with an added play-by-play of the DSS failure/coverup.

Let us all remember: it is well and good to express dissatisfaction with DSS/DHS; however, it is also our duty to support candidates for public office who support adequate funding for agencies entrusted with handling social issues. Otherwise, we are putting a low pricetag on our children's lives. In a democracy, we are all responsible and each of us shares a burden of the guilt when things go wrong.

OT....I just wanted to take a sec and thank you for your contribution to so many cases here on WS. Your extra effort in supplying us with a photobucket of various cases is invaluable.
Thank you so much!

:blowkiss:

I just saw this case this morning on the news and came here to see what you all had found. I've spent the past two hours reading over at least this second thread and some past news articles.

This case and the Kyron case just make me so angry! I am a stepmom, and raised a nephew, in addition to my own 4. I would NEVER do anything like this and it just makes me sick in my heart to see this. When we were children we always heard about the 'wicked stepmom' and I made sure I was NEVER even close to that. ALL of the children I raised were treated individually, but with the same love and affection from BOTH of us.

I can't believe this dad sat back and watched this woman mistreat HIS DAUGHTER in such an evil way. Grounding or punishing is one thing. Cruel and unusual punishment is something entirely different. Then she had black eyes?! OMG!

I am sick at heart because I don't see this ending well. Such a beautiful child and she'd already been given more than many of us have ever had to bear. Then this evil stepmom!

Bless her little heart. :(

Whoa people, chiming in here briefly and then chiming out... but IMO, LE worked and is still working their butt off in both of these now high profile cases, as well as about the 2 million others they are working at any given moment.

DSS sucks everywhere (not just NC) because they drop the ball. And they drop the ball sometimes because they have a lack of resources, are understaffed, overloaded with cases, whatever[/I]. And then other times, they just drop the ball because they are lazy.

Either way- seconding the post above that says if you see a problem, call LE and then call DSS. More importantly, don't be guilty of ignoring a problem in the first place.

NC DSS is broken.

DSS is broken in most all states. Not just NC. DSS workers are understaffed and overloaded most everywhere. We only hear about the worst case scenerios. DSS does help some children, but that is never reported. It is easy to criticize from the outside looking in. I agree that DSS as a whole needs drastic revamping, but that is not going to happen without funding, and funding comes from raising taxes, and no one wants to hear that. The state os NC is in a deep financial crisis, state employees have not had a raise in 4 years and last year a part of the salary was taken back out of paychecks.

No child's life is worth losing over money, but you have to have money to pay people to do these jobs. That is just a stark reality. You can only do so much with so few people.

I agree!

I know it's broken in almost every state.

I've provided links and talked about NC because this case is in NC.

I don't usually say a whole lot on here... but something really bothers me about this case. Zahra is such a beautiful little girl, and to see that precious smile on her face after all of the things that we know she endured with her health, and then to think about what she may have went through on top of that is heartbreaking, and brought tears to my eyes.

Then, the side by side/comparison photo of Elesa Baker.

Something about the look in her eyes in the left hand photo frightens me. Cold. Empty. I would think that without ever knowing anything else about this case... That look makes me uncomfortable.

Yes, I realize where the case is taking place. But to generalize that NC DSS is broken is too small a statement, the entire country's DSS system is broken. It's not just the kids in NC that are being failed, it is ALL children!

Parents bear the brunt of the blame in most all these situations. Especially the 2 prominent cases you have here in NC. There is no way I would tolerate ANYONE being abusive to my child. DSS would never need to get involved becasue I will look after my own child. Something the parents of Shaniya and Zahra both failed to do.
