NE NE - Benjamin Cannon, 20, Omaha, March 1995

  • #21
I really hope with cases like Jason Callahan(AKA Grateful Doe) that authorities will STOP assuming nomadic lifestyle=voluntarily missing. Makes me wonder how many others missing reports were refused.

Thank you. Ben is my older brother and even after they accepted the report the listed his stats incorrectly. It took another seven years and several phone calls and emails to get them to correct his height and weight and so on. I’m sure there are a lot of other cases like that too.

I believe you are both correct, that date 2004 date is only applicable for when he was reported missing but not when he actually went missing from his family in 1995.

From this site listing: Missing Persons - Omaha Crime Stoppers
(scroll down)

"Cannon was reported missing in May 2004, but has not been seen or heard from by family members since 1995. Cannon may have been traveling with the Rainbow Family in the mid to late 90`s."

If not this GDF fan Cannon may be a good match for the GD fan who was a victim of a hit and run accident in Georgia that same year.

I’m a GD fan as well and would love to work on those cases. Any info for how to find the GD fan victim of hit & run?[/QUOTE]

Hello. Ben is my older brother and I was hoping you could give me a link to the hit and run in Georgia.

I am so sorry that your brother has been missing. My heart goes out to your family.

Was there evidence (such as a conversation with a friend) that he did plan to travel when he went missing?

Were his friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc. interviewed, and is there any indication in which area of the country he was headed or last seen?

Were there ever any tips or rumors about what happened?

Did he have a passport to travel out of the country?

I hope your family will receive answers soon.

I am really sorry for the delay in responding to any questions. No, Ben had not told anyone anything. Because of the strained relationship with Ben and my parents he was not living with us. We were unaware that there was an issue until his friends came to our house asking if we had seen him. It was not unusual for us to not hear from him for a couple of weeks at a time and so no alarms went off until others came looking. Because of his mental illness that wasn’t diagnosed or being treated, my parents attempted to have him committed. The state said since he was 20 at the time he would have to commit himself, which he wouldn’t do, and then when my parents tried to file a missing persons report they were told no. This was a repeated scenario and it took an intervention from a detective and a lot of arguing to get anyone to take a report at all. When they did, the messed up his description and that took another seven years, a lot of emails and phone calls from me and an old family friend from out of state to get them to correct it.

Ok. So hadn't quite been in the best of touch with his family the last few weeks before he vanished is that right?
@MarthaC did you know of him to be involved with the Rainbow Family or was that just a rumor?
Thank you.

This stands out to me. These friends were close enough to him to know where his family lived and came looking for him. Why did they come there looking-- was he missing from the place he was staying? Were they the ones he was actually living with, and he unexpectedly disappeared from their home? Was his family able to talk to whomever he was last staying with?

Because I think it's important whether he seemed to have "packed up and left" or went missing from a home suddenly without taking his belongings. Was it said what he left behind? Because sometimes with mental illness a person walks out of their house and ends up in nature nearby and then has a misadventure. Maybe he didn't go off to live a transient "rainbow" lifestyle but actually just disappeared from his last "residence?"

I guess there is no way to know, but if it's known whether he took his belongings from the last place he slept, or left them there, it might point to one possibility more than the other.

I hope I'm making sense.

Making complete sense. And that is a good question. Unless they weren't able to find him where they thought he was staying so tried his family's home. ?

Right, but then whomever he was staying with would have known whether he seemed to have packed-up his important things or left them behind...

The police won't accept the missing person report? Why? Because she was an adult? Because of the cult? What illness did she suffer from?
