I was looking around WBS and noticed a thread on a Rick Hazelton who has just been found after 33 years by a childhood friend. His friend saw a sketch of someone who looked like Rick and contacted a friend, a retired police officer and they sleuthed and found. Rick. He had made a life and raised a family, he had left as a young adult because he thought no one cared. Sorta sounds familiar.
How come that isn't happening here. Is the assumption that Chance is dead and that assumption is driving any investigation? What did these two men do that eventually found their friend, is it being done for Chance?
End of rant. This story is making me nuts !!

If Chance is alive, eventually he will likely use his ssn for work and he can be found that way, right? Everyone who knows him well thinks he would never leave his son and/or break his moms heart. But people do strange things.

I keep seeing people talking about Chance walking in a literal ditch. I don't think that taking that term and applying to an impaired judgement is on the right track, IMO. I listened to the podcast and it was clear that they meant he was walking along the highway. They did not mean that he was walking IN a ditch. Now, I am not familiar with that area at all, but wasn't sure if they meant that the actual specific highway was nicknamed the ditch or if that was a local saying for walking the highway, as in any highway. Maybe a local can enlighten me. But I was quite sure that the podcast zeroed in on that statement and clarified that it was what the highway was called. Anyway, someone upthread pointed out that since that was not the location last seen, it wasn't relevant. But in case its being used to determine mental state, I thought it should be mentioned.

If he's alive, how is he getting by? He hasn't used any bank accounts that we're aware of. He'd need a place to eat, food, water, etc. Since the night he disappeared, he hasn't been heard from at all. I don't get that this was a planned disappearance, he was calling friends for a ride home. That tells me that is where he was heading- home.

From there, no one knows what happened to him.

I think by now, we should all know the difference between what a ditch is referred to out there (by the highway), versus a drop on the side of the road elsewhere? It's been said numerous times already that it isn't the latter- that he was on the highway walking.

You are correct. I posted about it because I saw someone questioning his mental state if he was down in ditches walking. I wanted to clarify that because of what I heard in the podcast from his mom.

So out of curiosity...in a standard missing person's case - does law enforcement monitor their SSN for activity? There's been discussion that Chance would need to use it if he can't find work "under the table", but for some reason I thought only P.I.s would be looking for that type of thing. Anyone know?

This case, like Ray Gricar (missing Centre County, PA DA), is one of the few in which I don't have strong theory. Foul play, tragic accident, walk away, even suicide, all still on the table. No clue at all! Baffling!

Yes. His phone and bank account would be flagged as well. MOO

That is a great group, and they are working hard to find him. There's no gossip, no members fighting or bickering. They update daily, and if you donate, you know exactly where the money is going (air and water drones, etc). Kudos to his best friend and his family that are doing an amazing job running theses searches and this page on FB.

Posting this in its entirety as it is a statement issued by Gering PD:
BY Media Release | November 27, 2019
“The Gering Police Department is releasing information to provide the general public an update on the Chance Englebert investigation.

On July 6, 2019 Chance Englebert left an address in the 700 block of O Street on foot. Chance was seen on video walking past two businesses in Gering and an apartment in Terrytown. One of the videos of Chance shows him walking in the area of the intersection of Terry Boulevard and Stable Club Road in Terrytown. From the Terrytown area we have no other video showing Chance walking.

There was a lot of information floating around that Chance’s phone last pinged at WTT in Scottsbluff. This information is not correct. Chance’s phone last communicated with a tower near Riverview Golf Course just west of Scottsbluff. Because of cell phone technology, the information did not greatly narrow down the area Chance may have last used his cell phone. The last time Chance’s phone was used was shortly after 9pm on July 6, 2019 in an area 2-3 miles south to southeast of that tower.

During the week of July 8th, the Gering Police Department along with the Scottsbluff Police Department, Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska State Patrol, as well as employees and volunteers from over 15 other agencies and businesses conducted searches in the areas that cell phone information showed Chance’s phone was pinged. The searches were aided by use of watercraft and sonar from the Scottsbluff Fire Department and Gering Fire Department. A fixed wing airplane from the Nebraska State Patrol and a helicopter from AirLink were utilized. The Central Gering Canal was drained to a very low flow rate so personnel could search it.

Since that time, the Gering Police Department has utilized the services of search and rescue dogs along with cadaver dogs from organizations in Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico. While the initial searches centered around the area of southwest Scottsbluff, a greater area has been searched using drones, along with volunteers on the ground. To date, no evidence or traces of Chance Englebert have been discovered.

Numerous interviews have been conducted in connection with this investigation, including Chance’s family and friends. With assistance from the Scottsbluff Police Department, Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office and Nebraska State Patrol investigators have been able to follow up on dozens of tips and information that have come in. Investigators have also followed up on dozens of potential sightings of Chance in numerous states, including Colorado, Wyoming, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Texas, and Missouri. The law enforcement agencies in the jurisdictions where the potential sightings were reported have assisted in looking at video and other requests made of them. Thus far, none of the potential sighting have resulted in any useful information that will bring us closer to finding out what happened to Chance.

Investigators with the Gering Police Department remain in regular contact with investigators from the Nebraska State Patrol, the Scottsbluff Police Department and the Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office. The other agencies have been involved from the beginning of the investigation and they remain involved. Gering PD investigators have been in contact with personnel from the FBI office in Omaha. At this time the information in the Chance Englebert investigation does not contain the federal elements necessary for the FBI to open an investigation. FBI personnel have said that if information is developed that changes the circumstances being investigated, they will review that information with local investigators to determine if they can open a Federal investigation based on information that suggests a federal violation has occurred. The FBI has offered and continues to offer any assistance that local authorities deem necessary.

One of the most common questions that has been asked of our investigators is why has this investigation not been deemed to be a homicide. As of this release there is no evidence to suggest foul play is involved in Chance’s disappearance. What we know at this point is that Chance was walking in Gering and Terrytown on his own free will. Because there is no evidence of a crime being committed the investigation remains in its original classification as a missing person.

There has been a lot of misinformation and opinions passed around on different social media platforms with respect to the investigation. While we recognize that people are afforded the freedom of speech by the U.S. Constitution, we ask that people consider the consequences of the comments and thoughts they express on those most effected by Chance’s disappearance: his family and close friends.

We encourage anyone with information about the investigation to contact the Gering Police Department. Although this remains an open Missing Person investigation, we welcome the sharing of information. Please keep in mind that not all information we have can be shared but we welcome an open dialogue. The most beneficial way to help is to say a prayer for Chance, his family and the Law Enforcement personnel looking for answers.

Investigators from the Gering Police Department, Scottsbluff Police Department, Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office and the Nebraska State Patrol continue to follow up on information that comes in from the public and those who knew Chance. Chance’s disappearance remains a priority for all of our Departments and our community.

Below is information released from the July 10, 2019 media briefing”

This begs the question: WHY for nearly 5 months have they said the phone pinged at WTT???

I have been following this thread from the very beginning and my first and lingering opinion is that he had had a very upsetting and difficult year on all fronts. He got engaged, found out he was to be a father and got married all within about a year. He comes from a close knit family but it seems that integrating his in-laws and his own family had not been working well. He lost his job when the mine closed. He had a mortgage, truck payment, new baby. He went down to Gering for the 4th of July and while there, went golfing and had a misunderstanding with an in-law over his new job. He wanted to go back home because his new job started Monday morning. Arguments followed and he went for a walk to cool off. He was seen on three street cams. He called his closest friend for a ride and he was unable to help but was trying to find someone who could. Then nothing more.
My own opinion is that he has left the area either with help or alone and is making a new beginning. I know that people say he would not leave his child, but Bank's comes with a mother and in-laws that he was having considerable difficulty with. I know people insist that he is very close to his family and would not do this to his mother. But, again I say the longer a person is away voluntarily, the harder it is to go back. After the first rush of relief and tears of joy, the feelings of resentment and "why did you put us through this" begin to surface. And, the bottom line is he would be coming back to nothing different from what took him away plus now there is a deep layer of feelings on everyone's part of "how could you do this to us".
The other take I have on this is that he did walk away, intending to get to Moorcroft and his new job but someone he knew came by and picked him up. A more intense argument ensued and he was killed in anger and his body just hasn't been found yet. Not premeditated by just high emotion and I believe if this is the case someone is being protected and the facts hidden.
This man's disappearance has really divided and polarized the community. There is a high level of anger on SM accounts and it is well nigh impossible to even begin to know was is actual fact and what is fueled by which side you are on.

His best friend has started a new grass roots effort to organize searches and their site, Let's start with Chance
is remarkably focused on just finding Chance.

My last thought is this; There doesn't seem to be as an intense a interest and follow through on searching for a live Chance and I wonder why.
All of the above is MOO MOO MOO MOO.
