A recent death in Venango is not of suspicious nature, according to Perkins County Sheriff Jim Brueggeman.
"It was a medical call," said Brueggeman, "and unfortunately the gentleman passed away."
Michael Collins, 54, of Ogallala, was found unresponsive and not breathing by Perkins County Ambulance personnel who were dispatched to a home in Venango on Monday, Nov. 10, where Collins had spent the night with a friend.
Brueggeman said lifesaving measures were performed on Colins while he was transferred to Perkins County Community Hospital. Collins died enroute to the hospital even though Dr. Clifford Colglazier met the ambulance between Grant and Venango, said Brueggeman.
An investigation was performed at the home where Collins had spent the weekend, and Perkins County Coroner Rick Roberts ordered an autopsy, with preliminary results indicating Collins had some sort of heart disease. Authorities are waiting on toxicology reports, however, everything points to Collins' death being a health issue.
"There was no foul play, and no signs of anything abnormal," said Sheriff Brueggeman.
Collins' family members live several states away and funeral arrangements are pending.
Two Deaths
Under Investigation
The deaths of Corrie Wood, 28, who died Sept. 20 at her residence in Grant, along with the recent death of an Imperial woman, 38-year-old Kassi Krutsinger, are being investigated by the Nebraska State Patrol.
An autopsy performed on Wood, who had spent the previous evening with friends celebrating her birthday at a bar in Venango, indicated she had died as a result of blows to the head and body. The Nebraska State Patrol was then called in and her death is being investigated as a homicide.
The investigation is still active and evidence has been submitted to a crime lab, said Sheriff Brueggeman. "It's (the investigation) still progressing down the road we want it to go."
Anyone with information on Wood's death is urged to contact the statewide Crime Stoppers number at 1-800-422-1494.
The Nebraska State Patrol is also assisting in the death investigation of Krutsinger who died at her residence in Imperial on Oct. 31.
According to Imperial Police Chief Larry Browning, Krutsinger was dead when emergency personnel arrived, thus an investigation began at the residence and the State Patrol was summoned. The recent death of Corrie Wood in Grant, whose autopsy triggered a homicide investigation, was a factor in the Imperial law enforcement's decision to call in the Nebraska State Patrol immediately.
An autopsy on Krutsinger was performed in Scottsbluff, and although the cause of her death is unknown, blunt force trauma and suicide have been ruled out.
