Jenkins, who was single, taught part time at Metro Community College and owned several rental properties in north Omaha.

A 1980 graduate of Holy Name High School, Jenkins earned a bachelor's degree from Creighton University and a master's at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. In 2007, she obtained a doctorate in conflict analysis and resolution from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Millard said Jenkins put her education into practice by participating in peacekeeping activities in Northern Ireland and monitoring elections in Nigeria. For a time, Millard said, Jenkins worked with the Georgia-based Carter Center, founded by former President Jimmy Carter, and was interested in working on conflict resolution with families.

One of the main goals of Jenkins' work, Millard said, was for people to improve their abilities to maintain healthy relationships and get along well with others.

how truly sad. this woman accomplished so much yet despite having some exposure on the international scene, she stayed close to her community in Omaha where she had long-standing family, business and academic ties.

that some creep could end such a life so senselessly is tragic.

Just checking in before heading to bed....hoping that whoever did this crime will be caught quickly and prosecuted to the full extent the law allows.
I feel so bad for this victim and her family and friends.....

Just read on Action 3 News FB that Monique was a tenant in an apartment above Karen's bar that she was trying to evict "at the time of the killing"

I never forgot about this poor woman and wanted to see what was going on with the two deviants charged in her killing.

the defendants are half-siblings Monique and Gary Lee. Monique has been found incompetent to stand trial.

Gary Lee, 21, was sentenced to 65 to 100 years in prison for his role in the 2010 death of Karen Jenkins...

Prosecutors said Lee held Jenkins' legs down as his sister, Monique Lee, strangled Jenkins with a vacuum cleaner cord...

In October 2011, Gary Lee agreed to plead guilty to second-degree murder in return for testimony against his sister... Gary Lee had an outburst on the witness stand and contradicted his earlier testimony, claiming he murdered Jenkins on his own. Lee was barred from further testimony and charged with perjury.

The strange, sordid and, at times, miserable life of Monique Lee has ended. Lee &#8212; the 29-year-old serving a life sentence for strangling her landlord, Omaha businesswoman Karen Jenkins &#8212; died at the Nebraska women&#8217;s prison in York. The cause of death was not known but Lee reportedly had been housed in a medical unit for an illness in recent days...

Lee and her brother, Gary Lee, lured Jenkins to one of Jenkins&#8217; vacant apartments on the pretense that Gary Lee wanted to rent the apartment. The brother and sister then strangled Jenkins. Monique used Super Glue to seal her nostrils and mouth shut.
