GUILTY NE - Kerra Wilson, 8, Mitchell, 21 Sep 2011

  • #101
I just finished reading this thread. I have been to/through Mitchell & Scottsbluff, Nebraska several times. My children's bio dad lives there. Mitchell is very small and quite a bit of the farm workers/migrants live there. The main road through the middle of town does turn into a highway that goes one way into Scottsbluff or if you go the other direction you end up in Wyoming. I am irritated that Kerra's story hasn't made our local news in Wyoming yet as it is very common for people to drive 2-3 hour spans in and around this area on a daily basis for work or medical appointments or just normal travel. As soon as I post this I am going to notify the local Wyoming news places and see if we can get this in the media here.

Thank you so much! It's so helpful to have someone familiar with the area posting with us!

Are there any waterways in the area? Mines? Culverts?

If LE is asking questions of other students in school this tells me that they are trying to verify a few things like "Did this child usually ride a bus or does a parent drop them off" "Did you see her the morning of ?"

To even ask this questions maybe they really do suspect someone in the family. Of course it could also be just standard questioning.

I am not sure if this link has already been provided, but it is the city-data link for Mitchell, NE.

It gives the population information, registered sex offenders, crime statistics through 2007, schools, churches, AM-FM radio stations, TV stations and lists the Pinnacle Bank as the bank and Subway as the business in Mitchell.

Thank you SDT..

I see in the article, that they state she is a SIOUX county girl, This has me :waitasec:

because the Mitchell Elementary School is in Scotts Blue County aways from the county line.

And Sioux County has not been in on the investigation...:waitasec:

Good catch, I noticed that it says she is from Sioux County too.

If you look at Sioux County though, it looks like there's pretty much no civilization in at least the bottom half of it (and it's a big county). So it probably makes sense that the people in the southern part of SC rely on the Mitchell County services.

Her being from Sioux County does make me think she lives in a rural area and didn't have the option of walking home. I'm not thinking that was a possibility (unless her bio-dad or another relative actually lives in Mitchell and tried to walk there).

A poster on FB wrote that this child used to live in Wyoming... IDK with whom though..

That "unconfirmed " report that she was seen in the Subway that morning is interesting. It would seem to be too late for her to be getting breakfast, IF she was dropped off at 8 :00 a.m. ? Wonder who she was with, IF she was there ?
How long does it take to "confirm " a sighting, as opposed to "unconfirmed " ? MOO

Eight-year-old girl reported missing

The Mitchell Police Department and other authorities are investigating a missing person’s report involving an 8-year-old girl.

[snip]

Nebraska State Patrol Sgt. Monica Bartling has confirmed the girl had been dropped off at the west doors of the Mitchell Elementary School at 8 a.m. this morning. The girl did not show up for school and the school notified her mother that she had not been in school.

[snip]

The girl’s relatives reported that she was last seen in the north parking lot of Mitchell Elementary School around 8 a.m.

[snip]

Bartling said an Amber Alert has not been issued because the NSP does not have any information so far that leads authorities to believe that the girl had been abucted. She said authorities also don’t have other information, such as a possible vehicle or person that the girl could be with that would be able to be provided to citizens.

quoting this article as it has Bartling's name in it (she is the LE most quoted so far in this case and is part of the the nebraska state patrol)

found her bio on their website... she is an experienced polygrapher and child interviewer as well!

Thank you Chili Fries, I still wonder why, if she does live in Sioux County that they have done no searches there, only in Mitchell and Morrill...

“We don’t know where she is,” Bartling said. “We do not know she has been abducted, but she is an 8-year-old girl who has now been missing for more than 24 hours.”

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children has now issued a flyer, which calls Wilson an endangered child. Bartling said the NCMEC chooses the description and she cited Wilson’s age and length of her disappearance as reasons for the classification.

Bartling said searchers were focusing Thursday on areas in and around Mitchell, Morrill and county canals and rivers.

“She is a tiny girl,” Bartling said. “We don’t believe she would have walked to Scottsbluff, and we hope someone would have reported her if they noticed her.”

The North Platte River runs close to Mitchell and the surrounding area. It is a fairly large river for the area which is mostly a lot of dry open plains type land. There is quite a bit of oil drilling that goes on in the direct radius of here. I am not sure about culverts or mines.

I contacted 8 local newspapers. The only one that already had the story was the Torrington Telegram. At least one has picked it up. I am hoping that some of the bigger media outlets will run the story.
