I'm sure you did not mean what I think you are saying. I'm tired and maybe a little over-sensitive tonight.

But you can make that call if you suspect something is wrong with a child. Producing evidence or proof would be up to LE. The important aspect is bringing it to their attention. As you stated, it's hard to prevent what is not done in public.

We should all have the mentality of a mandatory reporter.

AMEN! I just said on another thread that if anyone suspects anything, call 911. Many people will disagree with me (don't care - let em) LOL.

Before becoming a scanner chatter junkie, I may have said "eh, use your better judgement". But I've heard too many calls about people who forgot to lock their doors, or their cat is locked in, or they have a flat tire....and yes, 911 actually follows up on these silly calls.

If you think a child is in danger inside or outside of your home - DEAL WITH IT. Don't ignore it!!!

Okay - that's my opinion.

The rural Mitchell man charged with first-degree murder Friday in the death of his 8-year-old stepdaughter Kerra Wilson is being held without bond after telling Sioux County Court Judge Russ Harford he does not want an attorney to represent him.

During his initial court appearance, 32-year-old Salvador Carl Lopez also told Judge Harford he wanted to waive a preliminary hearing. , which means his case will immediately move to district court. A date for the arraignment of Lopez, where he will enter a plea has not been set yet.

Harford granted Sioux County Attorney Adam Edmund's request to hold Lopez without bond after Edmund cited the serious of the crime, the defendant's apparent admission to the crime and the fact he was a flight risk because of connections to Mexico including a wife and father. Lopez will be held in the Dawes County jail until his next court hearing.

Why would he not want an Attorney?

He has a wife in Mexico?

As we have witnessed in several cases, people do not call police often enough even when they witness "things". People knew that Zahra Baker was being abused and did not call police. There were some that did call, but if there had been more calls, maybe she would have been saved from the situation.

How many people saw a young girl (Jaycee Duggard) living in a back yard in a tent? How many people turned that information into LE? How much sooner could she have been saved?

How many people hear screaming and block out the noise because it is a domestic issue; only to have someone found dead the next morning? It happens WAY too often to me.

People need to NOT be afraid to speak up. You do not need to necessarily put yourself in harms way, but call the police. Get involved enough to have a clear conscience. JMHO

I see he's got a line shaved into his eyebrow which might indicate a gang symbol. He's a little old to be making a fashion statement like a lot of high school kids are doing with this. In fact, a lot of schools are banning the shave lines in eyebrows because of gang association.

I wonder if he's in one. And what his ties are to Mexico, notorious for gangs and the current drug wars. If he actually has a wife there, did he enter the US illegally and marry a US citizen to stay? How did he end up in Nebraska from CA? Online hookup with Kerra's mother?

Perhaps that's why there is no real criminal record on him. He may have gone by different names in the past.

Is he planning to plead guilty, hence he doesn't feel the need for a lawyer?

might just be a scar. I know some that have childhood scars from falling on their eyebrows and hair doesn't grow there. :waitasec:

I assumed that line was a scar. If he has a wife in Mexico, I wonder if he also has children there? Does he have a record, RSO?

So many questions, so few answers.

Looking closely at the mugshot in post 826, it appears to me that the line in his R eyebrow is part of a scar that extends up his forehead an inch or so on that side. If this were a "typical" gang sign I'd expect to see more/corresponding slashes on the L eyebrow.

As to him not wanting a lawyer... I speculate that:

- he intends to plead guilty, OR
- he wants to represent himself in a not-guilty plea (unlikely given that he apparently confessed), OR
- he doesn't believe he will live to trial, which makes me hope that he is on suicide watch and is being isolated from other inmates.

:twocents: and :cow: only.

Snipped-

A complaint against Lopez places Wilson's death on Sept. 21, though it is not known if that has been confirmed by an autopsy. Authorities have not said when an autopsy will been scheduled. Sioux County Attorney Adam Edmunds declined to make any statements in connection with the case. He said all statements from the county attorney's office would be made in press releases.

During Monday's court hearing, Lopez clarified his name as Salvador Carl Lopez, correcting an official complaint that identified him as Salvador Carlos Lopez.

His voice faltered on the first "yes" answer he gave to Judge Russell Harford as Harford asked if he understood that he was charged with first-degree murder, a Class I felony, in the girl's death.

Lopez also told the judge that he understood that death was the maximum penalty for the offense. Harford also repeatedly asked and had Lopez state that he understood that he had a right to an attorney and a right to a preliminary hearing. Lopez said he did not want an attorney to represent him and waived his right to a preliminary hearing.

Yes it could be a scar, which is how the trend started in the first place. It is considered "tough" to have a scar on your face, especially if you're in a gang apparently. Like a knife wound to the face is some sort of right of passage or something? The kids today are just copying the trend of shaving a "scar" into their eyebrows that was actually first started in the 80's and was made popular by Vanilla Ice of all people. LOL.

It's just very coincidental to me that he'd have a scar in a very popular place on the eyebrow for the "fake shaving scar". Maybe some gang initiations involve carving a real scar there?. :waitasec:

Something just tells me there's more to him than just a guy from CA with no record who moved to Nebraska and married Kerra's mother and decided at 32 years old to sexually assault and murder a child. His first real crime ever. Doesn't add up to me.

Yep, I have a scar next to my eye like that, as well as on my eyebrow and so does my brother.
I threw something and hit him in the head. I don't remember what it was, but I am sure he could give you every detail. :innocent:

I would think if it was a gang symbol it would be less subtle? Or maybe I just knew people who were more "out there."
I knew a guy who tattooed hitler's face on his chest... people who had their gang signs tattooed on themselves... so the idea of something that could so easily be an accident is a bit odd to me. :waitasec:

It could definitely explain his lack of a record though....
However, him coming from Mexico and changing his name could as well. As could a previous lack of opportunity to commit such a crime.

Or at least commit such a crime here in the US. :(

Has there been any word at all of anything that was going on that leads anyone to believe this was possible? Had anyone seen any "signs"? It just seems bizarre to me that this man has so little criminal history...much like in the case with Breeann recently. That is what I meant by saying it seems almost impossible to be able to prevent certain crimes. Not that anyone shouldn't try their best, if they suspect something sinister.

(Okay I see there is some speculation that maybe he has a record under another name?)

Could it be the father's wife? Hard to tell...

I was pointing out the fact that it said "children and witnesses were left in the Lopez household" Did the children or the mother witness the murder????

The article is certainly not written very well but that is what I decided was meant, that his father and his father's wife lived in Mexico.
