Lourenco-Batista, 29, and two other men were in court Tuesday to face charges of unauthorized use of personal and business bank cards belonging to Vanderlei Szczepanik and his family.

Lourenco-Batista, Jose C. Oliveria-Coutinho, 35, and Valdeir Gonclaves-Santos, 30, each appeared in Douglas County Court and waived preliminary hearings. They are accused of running up charges totaling $4,347. All three are illegal immigrants from Brazil, police have said.

I made a posting about this case based on the daughter's interview with WOWT TV here in Omaha- the posting was on the 'Omaha Double Murder' thread in 'Crimes in the News."
Some of us think there is a pattern here regarding homicide cases and OPD. They have held the guys with the credit cards for how long? No charges? Nothing?
OPD retriees get pension benefits sometimes in the high six figures. A lot of us in Omaha are wondering what some of them do to earn it.
Could the daughter be better advised to contact authorities in the Justice Ministry of Brazil? Maybe they in turn could get the FBI or DOJ to become involved and take this case out of the hands of the local gumshoes. Clearly they are stumbling around, as usual.

first news in months on this case and each of these news stories have videos of Jaqueline's daughter Tatiane talking to reporters and showing the inside of the house where they vanished:

the first video references an upcoming court date for the men.

webrocket: Bless you for finding this and posting it. I had just been thinking about the family the other day and wondering if there were any updates.

WOWT TV had a story about the daughter's concerns on their news website this week. Usually most stories on there get dozens of public comments. This one got exactly three. I made one, someone else did a 'hope they find them ok' sort of brief one, then nothing. Last evening I posted again and suggested that this community needs to be more concerned about this case and suggested that maybe why there is so little concern is that the family were immigrants. I hope this is wrong- but, I just cannot comprehend why this case has had so little public interest. No one seems to care.

A year later, family still missing

It was about a year ago that the now-unforgettable call came from Omaha to the Brazil optical clinic where Tatiane Klein worked.

Jaqueline Szczepanik wanted to let her daughter know that she would be sending Christmas money for her grandsons. Except for an Omaha blizzard creating static on their line, nothing unusual came up. Klein and Szczepanik made plans to talk later.

But later never came.

The Christmas money never arrived. The mom who had kept in frequent touch with her daughter never again picked up her cell phone. Klein's stepfather, Vanderlei Szczepanik, and 7-year-old brother, Christopher, had vanished as well.

Klein arranged to fly to a foreign land — vowing not to leave Omaha until she had answers.

Today the Brazilian immigrant family remains missing, and Klein is awaiting a Jan. 26 trial she hopes will lead to “peace of mind” and a return to her homeland.

I wish the family could be found. I wish the men would be charged with their disappearance and probable murder.

It seems like this case is taking an awfully long time. The legal system is just a very slow process, I guess.

Head scratcher is right!! What in the world is happening?
What has brought this about? Did they reveal where they got the credit cards and the law is after someone else? Such a pity!

you would think that as a condition of dropping the charges the guys would have to say how they obtained the cards and what happened to the Szczepanik family.

to me it is no big deal if they turned on the third guy for just the bank card rap.

there was no deal here at all:

I don't understand. another article says a vital witness is missing.

if someone is using the bank cards of a missing person and they are captured on video using the cards, you'd think that would be enough to take to trial. if a jury acquits, so be it but I am having a hard time swallowing this outcome.

Charges Dropped In Missing Family Case

Elias Lourenco-Batista, Valdeir Goncalves-Santos, and Jose Oliveria-Coutinho were supposed to go to trial Wednesday in Judge Lamberty’s court for using the Szczepanik’s credit cards, after the family went missing.

The Douglas County attorney’s office has confirmed that charges have been dismissed against Lourenco-Batista and Goncalves-Santos.

[snip]

The third man in custody, Jose Oliveira-Coutinho, has waived his right to a speedy trial, but no date has been set.
