NE NE - Vanderlei, Jaqueline, Chris (fnd dec'd) Szczepanik, 7, Omaha, 14 Dec 2009

I refer back to my last post. WOWT TV here ran the updated story on these guys having charges dropped and the daughter's reaction. Two people commented, I was one. I made two of the three posts and in my second I asked what was wrong with the people of Omaha. This city spent millions of dollars and eight weeks of vented anger and emotion trying to recall our mayor (he won). Where is some of that energy when it comes to these people? I continue to think something is just rotten at OPD.
I would repeat- the daughter needs to raise hell with her government in Brazil and they with the US State Department. The Omaha cops seem not to care about these people. Sadly, neither do a lot of the public here as well. Maybe because they are viewed as Hispanic immigrants. OPD needs a big hard kick in the behind from the Feds on this thing.

Omaha, NE - Police say the three members of the missing Szczepanik family have been murdered but their bodies have not been recovered.

Neither police nor Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine will say how, when or why they were killed.

Talk about timing- I made my post just the other day and today it breaks.

I saw the county attorney on TV last night on this; he did not look happy. They as yet have no bodies and I get the feeling there was tremendous pressure brought to bear here. I'd bet their daughter did as I suggested she should and OPD and the county attorney got calls from the US State Department. I'm not saying I or anyone else on here had anything to do with getting this moving; I am sure she got the same advice from others.

I still think someone in Don Klein's office (county attorney) wants things in a neat package before they will indict. That is also in play on other cases in Omaha.

I wondered if they offered the other two a deal. Drop their charges if they will testify against this third guy for murder? The article says they were dropped because a witness could not appear. But there could be more? Either way...I hope this family is found and gets justice.

Neither police nor Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine will say how, when or why they were killed.

A 30-year-old man who worked for them has been booked on three counts of first degree murder in their disappearance. Kleine says he's seeking the death penalty for Valdeir Concalves-Santos because the three were murdered while the suspect was committing another crime and because the murders were "heinous."

This fall Jaqueline's daughter, Tatiane, took KMTV Action 3 News into the home where her family lived, showing us what she believed to be clues: blood stains on the floors, walls and bathroom.

This case may test the bounds of prosecuting murder cases without victims’ bodies.
Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine filed a death penalty case Friday against a Brazilian man in connection with a missing Brazilian family that had been living in Omaha.
Although no remains have been found, Valdeir Gonclaves-Santos, 30, was charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the disappearance and presumed deaths of Vanderlei and Jaqueline Szczepanik and 7-year-old Christopher Szczepanik.
Goncalves told others that he killed Vanderlei Szczepanik and then dumped the bodies, said an official with knowledge of the investigation.
Authorities believe Szczepanik’s wife and child met the same fate that day: Dec. 17, 2009. The family has never been found.

since the other two told the cops Goncalves admitted the murders, I wonder at what point LE knew this? the timing is suspect, the other two get charges dropped supposedly on speedy trial grounds and then what, three days later, the other guy gets charged with capital murder?

It certainly gives Goncalves's defense attorney something to work with if LE does not have much else other than these guys' say so.

It will be so interesting to see what additional information comes out as time goes on. Sure hope that LE does have their ducks in a row.

I had just heard of this family from another thread.... not sure who mentioned them lol, my memory sucks!

I am so glad to hear justice may be served for them, but i really hope they can be found and properly laid to rest, however their family wishes. They deserve at least that.

I am also very curious about the Assembly of God church.... Almost my entire life, I have heard grumblings about certain practices, and I just was wondering if anyone can point me to any place with more info about questionable practices?

I'm not sure that is appropriate to discuss religious practices of the Assembly of God church, at least in the context of this particular thread. from all appearances, the family members were victims of a crime of opportunity. from what I gathered, Vanderlei worked for the church but in the capacity of a carpenter/contractor to renovate a building. I doubt he was doing any missionary work and I can't imagine whom he would be proselytizing in Omaha, considering his English was less than perfect.

Whether this particular AOG church had anything to do with immigration scams is a different issue than religious practices. I don't recall reading anything where the church was investigated for anything like that although there was something about the full name of the church that struck me as odd a year ago when the thread was in its earlier days.

Because Oliveira remained in jail, IMO the only witness against Goncalves-Santos that is a potential problem WRT the speedy trial issue is Batista.

ETA: Sounds to me like the others might not be totally off the hook yet:

The man originally charged in the family's disappearance, Valdier Goncalves Santos, who worked for the family, now faces three counts of first degree murder.

Only Santos is being considered by police for murder charges, but investigation is still pending. He could face the death sentence.

Omaha Police, as well as federal agencies including the FBI are looking farther into this matter.

OMAHA (KPTM)- It's been one year since the Szczepanik family disappeared.

Although no bodies have been found, investigators say they have enough evidence to rule the case as a triple homicide.

"The one thing I'm sure is I'm not leaving the United States until I find out what happened with my family," said daughter Tatiane Klein from Brazil.

Shocked daughter seeks closure

The sick feeling in Tatiane Klein's gut grew stronger as months turned into more than a year without any sign of her missing family members.

[snip]

Now Klein, who came to Omaha from Brazil a year ago to follow the investigation, is seeking a peaceful closure. She is planning a 4 p.m. memorial service Saturday for Vanderlei, Jacqueline and Christopher Szczepanik.

I guess I'm just sort of shocked that this case didn't get more coverage. The entire family disappeared, for Pete's Sake! I am not familiar with Omaha, but as someone who lives in the midwest, I hope this family's immigration status is not the reason for the lack of media attention.

Prayers for the family and their daughter, who so desperately needs and deserves answers.
