Amber Alert for missing children Jeffrey (10) and Emma (8)

BEERTA - The police have issued an Amber Alert for 10-year-old Jeffrey and his 8-year-old sister Emma from the Beerta area in Groningen. The children have been missing since Saturday afternoon 3:30 p.m.

They were presumably taken by their father the day before yesterday, and since then there has been no trace of them.

Last night, the police shared a photo and the name of the suspect. It concerns the 67-year-old Klaas Bijl.

The search now seems to focus on Finsterwolde, a village near Beerta.


Police are asking people to be on the lookout for a gray Toyota Avensis with license plate 77-NLV-4. The father may have left in that car with the children.

"Dat vermoeden we onder meer omdat er een brief is gevonden die door de verdachte is geschreven", meldt de politie. "Deze brief geeft aanleiding om te denken dat de kinderen in levensgevaar verkeren."

Sporenonderzoek maandag in de Carel Coenraadpolder bij het Groningse Finsterwolde heeft niets opgeleverd. De politie zocht in de polder na tips die ze had ontvangen. De kinderen zijn sinds zaterdagmiddag vermist. Ook hun vader uit Beerta is spoorloos. Voor de kinderen is een Amber Alert uitgegaan.

Just after noon, tire tracks were found in the Carel Coenraadpolder that lead to the water. These tracks gave reason to do further research at this location. Forensic research was carried out and the water was searched using sonar boats. The missing Emma and Jeffrey have not yet been found, nor has suspect Klaas Bijl."

A car ‘of a similar type’ to that of the children's father has been found in the water in Winschoten in the search for the missing children Emma (8) and Jeffrey (10). In it there are ‘several bodies’, how many is not yet clear, police reported.

Police are going to remove the car from the water and examine it “with a lot of precision”. It means, according to the spokesman, that “we have to take into account the scenario that this may involve Jeffrey and Emma”.

Police had been searching the water near the Renselweg in the Groningen town since about 8.30pm. It is not known what prompted the search there.
