Michael P. is suspected of murder or manslaughter and of rape in the Anne Faber case. He is being examined in the Pieter Baan Centre, according to the Public Prosecutor.

The police traced the suspect because his DNA was found on Anne Faber's coat. The garment was found in a park in Huis ter Heide the week after her disappearance. After P. was arrested, Anne's blood traces were found in the car he had at his disposal.

The Public Prosecutor wants P. to be investigated in the Pieter Baan Centre. That was granted by the supervisory judge. He was previously convicted of two rapes and a number of violent assaults, but then refused psychiatric screening.

P. was so far suspected of involvement in the death of Anne Faber. This has now been expanded: he is suspected of "murder or manslaughter, unlawful deprivation of liberty and rape," according to the Public Prosecutor's Office.


The body of the 25-year-old woman from Utrecht was found in Zeewolde on 12 October after she had been missing for almost two weeks . P. was staying at a clinic in Den Dolder. He was at the end of years of imprisonment, was resocialising and therefore had more freedoms, which allowed him to go outside.

P. is due to appear before the court on 10 January, according to the schedule. The case will not be heard in detail yet.

Suspect Michael P. first hid the body of Anne Faber from Utrecht in an as yet unknown place, only to later move her by car to a forest near Zeewolde. This is reported by sources close to the investigation to AD.

The evening of Anne's disappearance P. was driving a stolen and uninsured scooter. The investigators think it is possible that he was planning to commit burglaries. It is still unclear how Anne was killed and where she died. Last Wednesday the Public Prosecutor announced that P. was not only suspected of murder or manslaughter, but also of 'unlawful deprivation of liberty and rape'. The judicial authorities are still in the process of drawing up a timeline to obtain a precise picture of what has happened.

Anne Faber, aged 25, disappeared from Utrecht on Friday evening 29 September, when she failed to return home after a bicycle ride in the Utrecht region. Anne left around 17.00 hours, when it was still sunny. That evening the weather turned and Anne ended up in a downpour. At a certain moment she came across 27-year-old Michael P.

After P. had hidden Anne's body, he decided to move it later to the Nulderpad in Zeewolde. When this happened is still unclear. In the car that P. had at his disposal, which was confiscated by the police, traces of Anne's blood were also found. Wednesday evening 12 October, P. told the police on his own initiative where he had buried Anne, after which forensic investigators found her on Thursday morning.

A few days after Anne had gone missing, the police decided to read her telecom data. Because her phone had not 'logged off' at the transmitter mast, as happens when a telephone is turned off or dropped, but had disappeared abruptly from the network, the police immediately suspected that something serious had happened. The last signal was picked up on a cycle path between Soest and Den Dolder.

P. came on the police radar when his DNA was found on Anne's coat. The coat was found by a passer-by on a cycle path near Huis ter Heide. Later her bike was found in a pond in Huis ter Heide, as well as her bag, which was laying nearby.

The convicted sex offender P. was staying at the forensic psychiatric hospital Altrecht Aventurijn in Den Dolder as part of a rehabilitation programme. In 2012, he was sentenced to twelve years' imprisonment on appeal for raping two underage girls under the threat of a fake weapon.

It also became clear on Thursday that P.'s degrees of freedom at Altrecht Aventurijn were even bigger than initially thought. A tiny 'contact trace' has led to the breakthrough in the murder case surrounding Anne Faber. Michael P., the suspect of the murder of the young woman from Utrecht, probably left a small skin flake on her coat.

That is what the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) has told De Telegraaf.

"We really had to use the most sensitive DNA technology to get a dna profile out of the trace. It was a very complex study," according to Suzan Demirhan of the NFI.

Producing a profile based on a hair, blood or sperm is usually a lot easier.

The Aventurijn forensic psychiatric clinic in Den Dolder will not publish a list this week with the clients' sentences as previously announced.

Such disclosure turns out to conflict with privacy laws, according to a clinic spokesperson on Friday. We are now looking at whether we can report something in a more general sense. This is not easily solved.

In Den Dolder, great unrest has arisen after a client of the institution was arrested on suspicion of the murder of Anne Faber (25). The body of the young woman was found in Zeewolde on October 12th in Zeewolde on indications from Michael P., who is suspected of having murdered her. It should therefore not be allowed, unless there are clear changes in the description that prevent traceability. The spokesman: "A punitive measure is a special form of personal data. Everyone has the right to privacy, including a convicted person. We can imagine that it is a difficult decision that the clinic has to make, because they also want to help the population by providing information. If the clinic needs it, they can contact us to check what information they can provide."

For more than a hundred years, psychiatric patients have been cared for in Den Dolder, for a long time without too many problems. Twenty years ago, a forensic department was opened there. In recent years, local residents have experienced more disturbances. Moreover, many people did not know that such dangerous offenders as Michael P. were living there.

The Forensic Psychiatric Department (FPA) of Aventurijn has eighty clients, half of whom have been convicted under criminal law. In the secured department there are 65, the others are in the open department. The clients in the open department also receive mentoring.

This FPA employs 160 counsellors, physicians, psychiatrists and therapists in multidisciplinary treatment teams. Among other things, they decide whether a resident is ready for leave or other freedoms. The aim of the clinic is to reduce the risk of recidivism by reducing the risk factors. If someone is psychotic, for example, they will be given medication.

But according to local residents, the clinic does not do enough to prevent drug and drink consumption and the residents get too much freedom. Additional safety measures have now been taken. There is more surveillance and the police are monitoring more.

The Ministry of Security and Justice has started an investigation into the clinic, including into the freedoms that Michaël P. received. Last week, four inspectors visited the organisation.

Last Tuesday I handed over the petition, perhaps surprisingly for you, but the petition remains open, which is why it has not yet been printed out. I indicated that I was in a position to receive many e-mails, including e-mails with similar stories or stories where the legal system has gone badly wrong. He has asked me to let him know and to include these e-mails in the investigation. Since I received thousands of e-mails, I would like to ask those who wrote to me to send me this mail again with the description "Investigation Minister". If you know someone in your area with a story, please inform them so that I can include it.

I also asked clear questions and asked for an amendment of the laws to be made where necessary. You have probably already heard the new Minister about the petition. Half of patients living at Aventurijn have committed a serious crime


Of the on average eighty patients in the clinic in Den Dolder, where Michael P. also lived, forty of them are staying on the grounds of a judicial measure. These are perpetrators of violent crimes (from minor to serious), sexual crimes and property crimes.

That is what Altrecht has written today on its website. With additional information, the institution wants to give concerned local residents a better insight into the patients who are staying there, how they arrived there, under which regime they are treated and what rules apply to their permits.

Michael P. is suspected of raping and killing Anne Faber. It has now become clear that during his stay in Altrecht-Aventurijn he was able to move around fairly freely. This knowledge has caused great unrest in the village, where many people no longer feel safe.

Altrecht initially announced that it would publish an anonymised list of criminal residents and the penalties to which they were sentenced by the courts. Later this week, Altrecht was unable to fulfil this commitment because of privacy legislation. Altrecht today writes as an explanation: "The group is relatively small. If you put percentages on them, it can easily be traced back to individual patients."

Regarding the rules governing their leave, Altrecht says that they are required to observe the legal frameworks in force. The assessment of permit applications is always a careful process. For the moment, of course, it is true that we too are people and that the events have had a profound impact on our organisation. This means that we take an extra critical look at everything and make an extra check on permit applications.

The treatment of the 80 patients in the Forensic Psychiatric Department (FPA) Aventurine takes place in two buildings: a secure building for 65 patients and an open unit for 15 patients. Also in the open unit is 24 hours a day supervision.

The patients who stay here suffer from various psychiatric disorders, says Altrecht. These include schizophrenia, autism, ADHD, personality disorders and addiction diseases. A combination of these is common.

But Altrecht does not become specific about the nature of the offences committed. The population of FPAs varies regularly, and therefore the percentage of offences committed for which patients have been convicted varies. There is no added value to mention per FPA which offences the patients resident there have committed. It is always a momentary snapshot.

I cannot say for sure what a minor violent crime is considered in the Netherlands, but in my experience "minor violent" offenders that end up in psychiatric care participated in things like stabbing someone in the leg with a fork, killing a family pet, throwing scissors at siblings, biting, all with clear indicators of mental distress.

Dorrestein cannot say whether the 27-year-old man has confessed.

The body of the 25-year-old Faber was found in Zeewolde after a disappearance of almost two weeks on 12 October. At that time, P. was currently being held in a clinic in Den Dolder for various sexual and violent crimes.

Michael P. is said to have used a stabbing weapon during the capture and killing of Anne Faber on 29 September. Presumably her body was not transported until the next day to a forest near Zeewolde, in the car of Michael P's mother.

In the period shortly after Anne Faber disappeared Michael P. ran with a knife through the garden of the forensic psychiatric clinic in Den Dolder where he stayed. According to various sources he made a confused impression and wanted to attack the imaginary ninjas he saw. Also in this period P. was sniffing ritalin.

The 27-year-old P. from Zeewolde is suspected of raping and killing Anne Faber from Utrecht (25). She disappeared on Friday evening 29 September, when she didn't come home after a bicycle ride in the Utrecht region. That evening she met P., who was driving around on a scooter in the area. Various sources report to this newspaper that in the days after Anne disappeared, P. showed strange behaviour in the clinic. According to a source, he appeared to be sniffed out. 'He smashed ritalin pills to pieces and crushed the powder. He also used cocaine. Not much later we saw him running a knife through the garden, because he wanted to attack the ninjas he saw.'

Another source confirms this story and was scared, because P. stayed in the open part of Altrecht Aventurijn's forensic psychiatric clinic. 'He couldn't deal at all with those freedoms and used a lot of drugs. These are easy available there.'

P. stayed in the clinic as part of a rehabilitation programme. It was already known that he enjoyed great freedoms there. He was free to leave the grounds, as long as he was inside before 22.00 hours. However, this curfew was not maintained. P. also had a relationship with another client, who became pregnant with him in June. This woman is now staying in a women's prison elsewhere in the country.

Furthermore, it turns out that P. felt 'bored' on the Saturday after he most probably killed Anne. In chat conversations, that are in possession of this newspaper, he tells that he had nothing to do and that it is 'boring in the ward'. He also announced that afternoon he would go to Zeewolde to visit his mother first and then visit his father. Two weeks ago, this newspaper revealed that P. hid Anne Faber's body in an as yet unknown place and later moved her to a forest near Zeewolde. In the dark red car of his mother, which he had at his disposal, traces of Anne's blood were found.

The sources tell us that P. knew the area around Aventurijn very well. He regularly went into the area together with other clients on the scooter, to smoke a joint on quiet spots. P. has meanwhile said that he wants to cooperate in a personality research at the Pieter Baan Centre.

P.'s lawyer does not want to react. Altrecht Aventurijn does not want to react while the investigation is still ongoing, as does the Public Prosecution Service.

I also don't understand why the place hasn't been shut down, staff let go/replaced, patients locked up securely etc. Was there anything like that in the news? Or did it stop at the couple of additional patrols? People who live around there must be so frightened. I would think that self-defense courses would have a lot of new participants now. At least I hope they have.

I'm too angry/frustrated to even follow this thread/case anymore. Had to check to see what's going on, but just confirms my decision to stay away. My apologies to ZaZara for not taking advantage of the amazing job she's doing documenting this insanity, but I just can't even.
