On 12 February 1998, the remains of an unidentified man were recovered from the Bosbaan, a rowing lake in Amstelveen, Netherlands. He has never been identified. The Dutch Police hold the case under reference number 98131791.

Physical description

  • Estimated age: 40–60 years
  • Height: 172 cm (approx. 5'8")
  • Build: solid
  • Hair: black, balding at forehead
  • Race: Caucasian
On February 12, 1998, the dead body of a man was found in the water of the Bosbaan in Amstelveen. He appears to have a piece of concrete on his leg and has a bullet wound in the head. It is clear that this is a crime. The victim did not carry any identity papers and the police do not know who he was to this day. There has been little attention for the case

I wanted to flag a possible cross-border match between UM-0114, the unidentified man recovered from the Bosbaan in Amstelveen, Netherlands in February 1998, and a missing Italian man, Emilio Bertin, who disappeared from Bagnoli di Sopra (Padova, northern Italy) in September 1996. I think it's worth a closer look, and I'm curious whether anyone has already pursued this lead.
Comparison: Emilio Bertin, missing from Bagnoli di Sopra (Padova) Italy, September 1996

What aligns
  • Age: Bertin would be ~42–43 by early 1998, sitting comfortably within the Bosbaan 40–60 estimate
  • Height: 170 vs 172 cm — within the margin of postmortem measurement
  • Race and build: no conflicts on either
  • Timeline: disappearance September 1996, body found February 1998 — a 17-month gap that's consistent with relocation, concealment, or delayed discovery
  • Geography: Bagnoli di Sopra is in Veneto, northern Italy — a region with strong historical migration ties to the Netherlands and Belgium
What doesn't fit cleanly

  • Hair colour: Bertin is listed as brown, Bosbaan man as black — though dark brown hair can appear black, and colouring differences in aged or wet remains are common
  • The Bosbaan death was a confirmed organised-crime style homicide (bound, shot). Whether this fits anything known about Bertin's background is unclear — no context for his disappearance is listed anywhere
