Dutch cops are searching for a missing British tourist who disappeared after telling his friends at the airport that he had forgotten his passport.

Ryan Jones, 34, reportedly told his pals at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol that he did not have his travel documents with him and needed to go and get them before their flights on May 4.

After walking away from the group at 2:17pm, Ryan reportedly called his friends for a short time, but since then he has not been heard from.

Police have since asked the public for information regarding his whereabouts, and have asked people to look out for 'a large man, 6'3" tall, possibly wearing a white baseball cap and has a tattoo on his right forearm.'

Hopefully he just wanted to stay a bit longer in Amsterdam and will contact someone soon.

Luckily it doesn’t sound as late night leaving bar scenario which often ends in water.

I don't know. If that were the case (wanting to stay longer) he would surely have just said so. And the saying had forgot travel documents... not sure that stands up.

this is local to me! it seems that so far there is not much information in the dutch media, every article is repeating the same information from the police that has also been shared here

the only additional bit of info i could find is

Where in Britain the man is from, a police spokeswoman would not say. Nor could she explain why it was decided to declare the missing person urgent after only 24 hours.

some general information from an article about what the amsterdam police can and can’t do in case of a missing person. there has to be a specific reason to declare this case as urgent.

An important element in the urgency of a missing person case is ‘the right to be missing’. "It happens that people leave home and hearth without informing their loved ones to start a new life elsewhere and do not want to be traced. Government searches would then infringe on their privacy."

An urgent missing person case is, for example, the missing of elderly people with dementia, but also when the missing person is someone who urgently needs medication to stay healthy. A possible crime is also a reason to declare the missing person urgent.

If a missing person is declared urgent, police can look for signs of life in many ways: ‘Phone contact with others, bank statements from ATMs or simply people who have seen the person,’

But an important aspect remains the reason for search. The police expert explains that searches are initially conducted on the basis of the Police Act, which is about the assistance task. Only when there could really be a crime, more resources can be used such as phone behaviour tracing. This is allowed only when the Public Prosecutor gives that order from the Public Prosecutor's Office.
