New Billy the Kid photo said found, though some are dubious; would be only second one

At last! Thanks for posting, Tulessa, I was beginning to doubt my capability of telling one from another.

To my untrained eye it looks nothing like the "real" Kid.

My pleasure. I'm a big history and western buff. :)

Have to say, yes they look similar but the second/new photo does not look like a "kid". Not a male in his teens, looks mid twenties to me.

I think it is a hoax. If it is real, then modern technology should be able to match up the facial characteristics, distances, ears etc...comparing the original photographs.

Fact: Here is an unbiased statement from a reporter of the Las Vegas Gazette: “He is about five feet eight or nine inches tall, slightly built and lithe, weighing about 140; a frank, open countenance, looking like a school boy, with the traditional silky fuzz on his upper lip; clear blue eyes, with a roguish snap about them; light hair and complexion. He is, in all, quite a handsome looking fellow, the only imperfection being two prominent front teeth slightly protruding like squirrel’s teeth, and he has agreeable and winning ways.” Las Vegas Gazette, December 27, 1881

Fact: There were never any “Wanted” posters on Billy the Kid. The closest thing to a wanted poster was a reward notice the governor put in the Las Vegas Gazette in December of 1880. Which read:

BILLY THE KID
$500 Reward
I will pay $500 reward to any person or persons
who will capture William Bonny, alias The Kid, and
deliver him to any sheriff of New Mexico.
Satisfactory proofs of identity will be required.

(No that's not a typo error, Bonney was indeed spelled incorrectly)

So the poster which some of you may have seen which describes Billy the Kid as being 5' 3'' 120lbs with a posted reward for $5,000 dollars to be delivered to Sheriff James Dalton, is not only inaccurate, but never existed. There is also a funeral notice poster which is also a fake. Both are nothing more than souvenirs.

The real Billy had flappier lobes than the more attached ones of the new pic. Not him.

Here is a better copy of the new photo which is also a tintype, as is the other photo.

Here is the article that Daily Mail got its story from:

Newly unveiled photo appears to be Billy the Kid and friend

Photo Caption: Tintype photograph owned by Mesilla Valley man appears to be of Billy the Kid and friend Dan Dedrick

LAS CRUCES >> "The vintage photo features two young men in clean white shirts and suits. The handsome young man on the left can be positively identified as Dan Dedrick, said New Mexico history expert Frank H. Parrish of Las Cruces. And that's the "clincher" that helps prove the identity of Dedrick's good friend in the photo.

It's the legendary Billy the Kid, Parrish said.

Parrish has come forward with images made from a tintype owned by a Mesilla Valley man who wishes to remain anonymous."

Lots more...

Thanks for finding that. My pal in Albuquerque sent me the link in an email about a week or more ago and I lost it (and was too lazy to google it and find it again).

He sure has much less dark eyebrows than the other pic. I don't think the two are the same person.

Totally different. I can't even seeing them pass as brothers.

Interesting for sure. I looked especially at the eye shape and nostril shape. The two photographs seem very similar to me. The nostrils are shaped the same way, and the left eye ( appears on right in the photos) has a dropped or heavy lid on top. The very thin lips look the same to me too, although he is almost smirking in the known photo and showing no emotion at all in the posed photo. I think the sephia tone in the formal picture is what is making the mess of things. And the hat that is slightly askew in the identified picture. My hubs has ears that stick out, when he wears a hat, not a ballcap, but a hat, they are pinned back by it and his hair. I think that's what we are seeing in the identified picture. As for the lightened eyebrows, the picture looks to be over or under developed ( I'm no photography expert so I cant say which) or perhaps too much light was used? I think it would be very cool to have a professional do some analysis on the two pictures.

The other gent has been identified as Dan Dedrick. A friend of Billy's.

Thanks for the great side X side pic..!
I kinda see similarities though...the bridge of the nose, the left eye droop and shape/arch (but obviously not color) of eyebrows. Hmmm... Very cool mystery :)
Kid had some serious ears IMO--wow! :)

The bottom flappy part of ear lobes seem different though, I agree... But, could it be a lighting/photography kind of thing?
