In 2008, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner got a grant from the U.S. Justice Department for over $400,000 to put more resources into identifying the unidentified. The grant was renewed in 2010 and is up for renewal again this year, Bush said.

The grant enabled Virginia forensic experts to enter DNA profiles of 144 unidentified people into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, an online database at www.namus.gov for unidentified remains and missing persons records. Bush said the office hopes to enter information for the remaining unidentified people in the database soon.
