There were also small spots of staining from a liquid containing blood - she said that could have come from a bucket and then dripped onto the carpet.

Yesterday, forensic scientist Crenfeldt gave evidence for the prosecution about four spots of blood found on the fridge in the accused's apartment.

The was also a non-visible blood stain that was revealed on the fridge by luminol testing.

She told the jury yesterday: "In her expert opinion, the blood pattern likely came from an object with blood on it that had been cast-off through the air and landed in a line on the fridge".

"The object could be a limb on a human body," she confirmed to Crown Solicitor Brian Dickey.

In cross-examination Ian Brookie questioned her about the accuracy of this evidence.

"You can't say much about the four visible blood spots but you have used the non-visible blood to firm up why they are there," he said.

"Could the blood not have come from any number of different mechanisms?" he asked her.

Crenfeldt maintained the non-visible spots are consistent with a "cast-off" from an object.

"But you can't tell us what the object was, you can't tell us when it happened?" he said.

"No," she confirmed.

"Crenfeldt said her investigation found what she described were four visible blood spots on the fridge.

While she couldn't date the spots, and it was possible the spots were unrelated, they looked similar enough to have been deposited during the same event.

She told the court she had recorded in her notes that the blood staining on the fridge was likely caused by a "cast-off event"."

I imagine they would have processed the sample and the results will be provided by an expert from the forensic lab.

Although if she can't say when it happened I'm a bit confused because Grace only went there that night, so maybe they haven't tested it? Unless she means before or after her death.

"DNA profiling of blood collected from the fridge in the accused's apartment was 500,000 million times more likely to be Grace's, than anyone else, the court heard.

Forensic expert witness Turlough Thomas-Stone told the court DNA profiling from the fridge could have come from a female, which could have been Grace or another woman with the same DNA profiling of her.

He, therefore carried out a further analysis of the likelihood it originated from Grace.

He confirmed there was "extremely strong scientific support" that the sample of blood was Grace's."

"A mixed DNA profile was also obtained from the carpet underlay.

It showed two people - a male and female.

Thomas-Stone said the major profile component of the DNA found corresponded with that of Millane's.

He said this result was 300,000 million times more likely to be Millane's DNA and an unknown person than two random people in the general New Zealand population.

Once again, Thomas-Stone said this was extremely strong scientific support that Millane had contributed the majority of the DNA on the carpet underlay.

The two blood stains found on the inner lining of a suitcase discovered in the wardrobe of the accused's apartment were also discussed with expert witness, forensic scientist Turlough Thomas-Stone.

The first sample showed it was 200,000 million times more likely the DNA originated from Grace, than any other person.

The second stain was 400,000 million times more likely to be Grace's, he told the court.

Again, the results showed "extremely strong scientific support" the sample of blood originated from Grace, he told the court.

so this is all entirely consistent with his story that there was a small amount of blood (from her nose?) and all these various stains, castoffs, etc are from that only, diluted/spread out by the cleaning process?

Thomas-Stone confirmed under cross-examination by Ian Bookie Grace's body was tested for the presence of DNA.

"There was no detectable male DNA obtained from the deceased, which is likely to be down to the position the body was placed in for the six days?" Brookie asked him.

"Yes", he replied.

Diana Kappatos, who performed a post mortem toxicology report, said Grace's blood alcohol content was double that of the legal limit in New Zealand.

Grace's blood had 106 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood. The legal limit is 50 milligrams per 100 milliliters.

However, she said the alcohol present at the time the report was done might not have been the same as when Grace was alive.

There was no evidence to suggest the use of any recreational drugs, she told the court.

Because the tests were done days after her death, the alcohol levels detected may not be a true indicator of how much blood was present at the time of her death, the court heard.

"I cannot say if it was concentrated blood or diluted with other fluids," she told Brookie.
