Found Safe New Zealand - Tom Phillips, 34, shot/deceased; his 3 children who were with him found alive

  • #241
Did this NZ guy believe it could continue indefinitely? The children were growing up, what then?

RSBM.

Phillips didn’t view his children as independent human beings having the right to grow, develop and separate. He saw them as the continuation of himself. If he could survive in the bushes, they could. Truth: even a young child has the right for autonomy. Phillips deprived his kids of this right. It is a major crime. In answer: I suspect that he’d drag them around the bushes even as grownups. He viewed them as own proboscises, methinks. He took his daughter to rob the bank. This tells me everything.

MOO.

Excellent article! There is another case here at WS where a 15 year old shot and killed both parents and his siblings. It appears forced family isolation was a factor in that case, though not the only one. Its been a somewhat controversial subject as there are some who feel it could not have had a negative effect on a 15 year old male who had formerly attended school and been permitted normal socialization.

If there's links and rumors that can't be posted here, it's because they haven't been found to be legitimate and we try very hard to keep this site factually accurate.

Inviting is termed as a post where you invite other members to contact you to find out more information, rather than post it in the forum. This is not allowed and any posts with emails or invitations to contact for more information will either be edited or deleted entirely.

This includes use of the Private Message system via comments such as "Check your PMs" or "PM me" or "Add me" posted in discussion threads.

Think about it - it's like whispering into someone's ear while you are at a table full of other people. If you want to have a private conversation just have it. Don't announce it.

Additionally, please don't state or suggest that you are privy to inside information, but either can't or won't discuss it.

If you can't post it, don't!

Good article:
It’s an excellent article that really explains the impacts over the last four years, the present and their long term wellbeing. From personal childhood experiences I’ve found that people often don’t understand the impacts adults decisions have on children, and that they carry the scars for life.

It’s going to be very long and difficult road for them, I hope they are surrounded and supported lovingly for the rest of their lives.

Exactly, it's a horrible disfigurement on the psyche. I do hope they will continue to be supported for as long as necessary. They may never be fully normal again.

NZ seems to take suppression orders quite seriously - I've seen a few social media comments on this case removed with a message that it's by the request of the Government Communications Security Bureau. Would be interesting to know how many times Websleuths has been reached out to by government agencies! It's gotta be like playing whack-a-mole.

Its nice to see NZ prioritize the children's best interests. While i have an innate curiosity as to wth happened and especially *how* this could have happened (especially with the AID of others, wth?), it's important to recognize that these are LIVING children, not deceased, and that they very hopefully have long joyful lives ahead of them and I do respect that very much.

I am wondering if there is any fundraising in effect (or will be) for their direct benefit?

I would fully expect that the children (and probably their mother if she regains custody of them) will be given new identities to help them leave the past behind. New identities have also been provided for child criminals in the UK, eg Mary Bell and Robert Thompson.

Would they also be provided the resources to leave that area so their new identities could make an adequate difference in tebuilding their lives? Are there any significant factors like family support that would keep them from relocating outside of their fairly limited rural community? (I have no 1st hand knowledge of their community; this is based on comments made by others and a few comments in media sources linked here at WS)

I suppose the main issue would be whether the population of New Zealand is large enough at 5.2m for them to be melted into it elsewhere without immediately raising questions locally, especially if the intention is to keep the kids (and their mother if appropriate) together. It would be much easier in either Australia (28m) or Canada (42m), especially as those countries are also geographically much larger.

I think moving away from extended family would be a bad outcome . In such a rural area people tend to be protective of eachother and I would worry a lot less about them being harrassed by photographers by staying in their home.

Couldn't agree more. I'm not going to lie, I am very curious, but in reality it is none of my business. Those poor children!

I haven't been able to find a fundraiser but I certainly hope there will be

Well said! And I hope that, too. I keep telling myself how resilient children can be, but I know that there are a lot of things at play here that very well might have that thought thrown out the window.

A couple of articles

‘Lance Burdett, a former senior New Zealand policeman, last night warned Phillips's supporters that they will come to regret their stance as a fuller picture of his four years on the run emerges.

'There will be other aspects that will come out and they will have egg on their faces,' Mr Burdett, a hugely experienced detective inspector who has followed the case since its outset and spent time talking to the Phillips family, told the Daily Mail.’

The making of Marokopa's 'monster': Tom Phillips' childhood, hobbies and descent

‘in Year 10 he did a 12‑week outdoors and survival programme at Tihoi Venture School, which included activities such as kayaking, rock climbing, shooting, etc.’

That DM article was originally blocked by NZ servers so interesting it's now viewable again. But another one that clearly alludes to the fact that something horrific went on with those children.

Yeah, I think the DM article, as much as I hate to say it, sums up what a lot of us are feeling. JMO

I’d be really interested to know what local chatter is like now. Are people still holding to their support for him, or is sentiment starting to turn? Or maybe people just quietly backing away?
