Found Safe New Zealand - Tom Phillips, 34, shot/deceased; his 3 children who were with him found alive

Yeah, I think the DM article, as much as I hate to say it, sums up what a lot of us are feeling. JMO

I’d be really interested to know what local chatter is like now. Are people still holding to their support for him, or is sentiment starting to turn? Or maybe people just quietly backing away?
I would be surprised if local support for him was general, and suspect that it was probably from a relatively small number of incel-type "men's rights activists".

I sure hope no one is glamourizing or romanticizing what he did. He was no pioneer, laboring to tame the frontier. He stole the children away from their mother and life as they knew it. Relatives, friend's, school, health care, doctor and dentist appointments...

Harsh conditions, resorting to theft, armed and dangerous, so not okay.

Traumatizing.

I would hazard a guess that those glamourising what he did are all men of a chauvinistic and misogynistic bent.

Yes, the New Zealand version of Incels

A different sub-set of pondlife, IMO. Incels are men angry at not being able to get their leg over. Phillips had got his leg over but was angry at being denied complete control of his wife and the resulting sprogs.

He became a focus for a lot of people, men and women, for a myriad of reasons. People attached their lockdown-era, anti government feelings towards this case. In the local facebook community comments you'll see people saying he took the kids away so they wouldn't be vaccinated by force, would not be subjected to "woke" education, etc etc. Men who felt wronged by family court actions in the past. Plus a LOT of fierce anti-police sentiment.

It does not help that, in the absence of any news articles, the gap has been filled by awful AI-generated "stories" that are now posted on Facebook as "news" but are being reacted to, and shared, as if they were real information.

Which “stories” are you referring to?

Why so much anti-police sentiment there locally? Is there history?

As I recall, New Zealand's international isolation and domestic lockdown were longer and more extreme than almost anywhere else in the world, so it wouldn't surprise me if men's cabin fever also took on a more extreme form.
