GUILTY New Zealand - Yanfei Bao, 44, Real Estate Agent - Christchurch, South Island 19 July 2023 *arrest*

The final video taken by alleged murder victim Yanfei Bao on the day the Crown says she was killed has been shown to the jury.

Benjamin told the court that she recognised the dark carpet from inside the Trevor St property on the short clip.

Played in slow motion, a buckle could be made out in the video.

The detective said it matches a key chain Bao was carrying in a CCTV image taken two days before she disappeared.

Sounds like Yanfei experienced a very violent death. :(

Blood stains found at a Christchurch house matched the profiles of real estate agent Yanfei Bao and the man accused of her murder, the High Court has heard.

ESR forensic scientist Wendy Janes told the court the blood was not visible to the human eye but luminol testing revealed stains on walls, curtains, doors and carpet that matched their DNA profiles.

Cao, who is representing himself after sacking his defence lawyers, has been warned by Justice Preston over the nature of some of his questions, including repeatedly accusing police witnesses of falsifying evidence.

Yanfei is yet one more smart, hard-working, well-respected woman who was just doing her job. It is so ugly, it is unsafe everywhere.

A memorial service to celebrate alleged murder victim Yanfei Bao’s ‘beautiful life’ and ‘incredible accomplishments’ will be held next Monday in Christchurch.

Bao’s partner Paul Gooch told Stuff all Cantabrians were welcome to attend the service which would be held at the Our Lady of Victories Church in Sockburn at 11am on 18 November.

The service marks the first time family and friends have publicly had the chance to say good-bye to the popular and bubbly real estate agent.

GUILTY!

After seven weeks of a trial plagued by delays, a jury has taken an hour and a half to find Tingjun Cao guilty of the murder of Christchurch real estate agent Yanfei Bao.

[snip]

Speaking outside court after the verdict, Bao’s partner Paul Gooch said he felt relieved and a profound sense of gratitude, for both his family and Bao’s.

“The unimaginable circumstances surrounding Yanfei’s death have been a heavy burden for us to bear” Gooch said. “Coming to terms with this devastating loss has been an incredibly challenging journey, especially considering the complete lack of remorse displayed by the individual responsible, Cao.

“His actions throughout this trial have highlighted a profound absence of humanity.”

GUILTY!

Thank goodness! Didn't take the jury long at all to decide.

RIP Yanfei.

She says the jury deliberated for just over an hour-and-a-half on Cao's guilt.

"He left as he walked in this afternoon - with his hands behind his back, his head slightly down, he seemed silent, he seemed quiet throughout the jury reading out their verdict."

Wow .... lucky, lucky!

"After 10 months, and eight failed attempts to access murder victim Yanfei Bao’s phone, the stakes were high.

There were 1 million combinations for the iPhone 14’s six-digit pin, but only two chances left to crack the code.

Guess correctly, and police would unlock vital information about the real estate agent’s killing. Fail, and the team would have only one more attempt before the device permanently disabled, and her body might never be found.

Now, after reviewing documents and data extracted from other devices, she’d arrived at what she thought was a likely passcode.

It was a number close to Bao’s heart - the date her daughter was born, in reverse.

Davies was shaking as she tapped the numbers into the phone."

YYMMDD is a usual format for dates in Chinese.

Great detective work. (I wish she would help me with finding my lost pins...)

Yanfei Bao's killer Tingjun Cao removed from court after interrupting sentencing

The man who murdered Christchurch real estate agent Yanfei Bao has been removed from his own sentencing hearing after constant outbursts and interjections.

Cao is now watching his sentencing hearing from another courtroom.

Life sentence, 17 years non-parole period.

Chinese national Tingjun Cao will spend at least 17 years behind bars for murdering Christchurch real estate agent Yanfei Bao.

Her family told the High Court at Christchurch of the unbearable absence of Bao from their lives since the 44-year-old disappeared from Hornby in July 2023.

Bao's 11-year-old daughter told the court: "My family is sad and our house feels different. It is quieter and emptier." :(

RNZ asked Immigration New Zealand if a deportation order had been sought for Cao, national manager compliance Damon Tredaway said: "we will consider any appropriate enforcement actions once the court proceedings have concluded".

Cao would not be eligible for parole until 2041.
