CA Newbie Research Question

I'm super new to this but am trying to research a 2005 murder case for a family member. The case appears to be closed now (one person was charged back then but the case was dismissed and currently it is not listed as a cold case on the sheriff website of cold cases) and I'm just trying to find out who was charged with the murder. Unfortunately all I have is the victim's name, address, etc. Since the court records are only searchable by the defendant this doesn't help much. Any ideas on how to find out more information about this?

Find the newspaper archive for your state.

There probably will be newspaper articles about the death and about the POI and the charges.

Also, the Historical Society and/or Genealogical Society of the county may have a newspaper archive; possibly people who remember the situation.
