Newborn babies DO smile at their parents, researchers claim | Daily Mail Online

I've seen this in action for many years. A newborn will turn his or her head towards a parent when lying in a clear plastic cot in the mom's room. I've also had some very sad situations where moms didn't know if they wanted to bond with their infant.. I'd softly talk to the mom about how her baby had heard her voice for months, and knew her in the way a baby can know.
I'd encourage the moms to hold their babies close and talk to them, and many times, the newborn still in the mother- baby unit, would smile. It wasn't all gas, either. :)

It was always breathtaking because the mom would be transformed from anxious to serene seeing that special smile just for her.

Mine picked his head up and looked over his shoulder at Dad less than 12 hours old.

He was 2 weeks overdue, and seemed to never stop moving during the pregnancy so was likely stronger then most newborns.

Absolutely, newborns recognize voices and after a few hours Mom's scent!

Yes, yes, yes! I have always believed this and NEVER believed the "it's just gas" crap. Uhhh sorry but gas generally doesn't make me grin, you know? Babies are social humans. When they smile, they smile. I never understood why people were so resistant to the idea that a tiny new baby could be happy.
