I feel that if LE thought the letter was a fake, they would not dare stop searching for her. Yes, it could have been written by an abductor, but also by some lunatic fraud. That has happened too often. IMO they feel she did write it and was at least physically safe at that time. But again, that was months ago. Can't imagine why she would not get in touch again, unless she wrote that they should not expect any more letters. JMO

This is my personal opinion and partly based on the pamphlet for parents of missing children put out be the Dept. of Justice. Usually LE will put the parents out to the media for two reason IMO. Firstly, to humanize the child in case he/she is being held, secondly to observe the parents behavior for obvious reasons.

I don't have a real theory here, but I do find it interesting that Mom's letter was hand-written & I think that was to humanize Abby on how much she is cared about. Everything in this case seems very timed & calculated. For instance when her (I call) step-father was interviewed, her father, not sure on the exact dates but it seemed to rhyme to me. If you remember the case in Canada (Keenan) guessing two years ago now, police quickly figure how he was indeed abducted and had the parents talk about how much this little boy was loved by them and his brother & sisters, etc. The abductor returned the child (supposedly) unharmed after several days into his home that was under surveillance, although the family was not staying there. Very bizarre case, but it worked with a truly happy ending! IIRC the perp. was working on a construction crew in the neighborhood & thought the family was too big and wouldn't miss him or something similar.

A good point was made that LE doesn't appear to be doing ground searches. Yet, they have tossed the word "abduction" out in difference ways, since receiving the letter was announce. Personally, this is the first case (outside of Keenan) where I believe it is possible that LE really believes a child (Abby) maybe held against her will, therefore halting ground searches. If so, of course it would pertain to some info. in the letter IMO. Abby dating the letter is very fishing, it would be extremely unusual for a 14-15 year old would not do this. LE and her mother feel the letter is authentic. I also think think with the time that has passed and all the investigating that has been done, this is not someone in her circle of those she that she knows, but maybe an old acquaintance she vaguely is familiar with or internet predictor. But, if it was someone on the internet type thing, there would be tracks. Bottom line for me is whatever was in that letter, LE is not writing her off as a runaway.

Just as a side thought, I wonder how often 14-15 year olds even write letters these days. It seems to be becoming an outdated method of communication. I barely did when I was that age unless for a school assignment, and that was (gulp) about 14 years ago anyway. But, I had been taught proper letter writing and that involved correctly dating and addressing a letter.

Emily Ramos, another missing girl, from Florida, is same age as Abby and thought to be with a 21-year old male, named immediately. In every case I have seen, LE has named the POI as soon as they know, as long as the person is over eighteen. Clearly, in this case they either do not know or feel they know a "better" way to find her. But Abigail has been gone far longer than most of these girls who took off with an older male, so I am doubtful. JMO

I've been meaning to ask this question for two months, and I'll be darned if by the time I get to my computer, I forget it. every. darn. time.

Is Power Line Trail just for runners and walkers only, or can cars go down that road? Thanks.

Oh, and skibaboo and Jade- I've thought myself that she might be pregnant- with a different guys child, hence why she didn't go to the Campbell's for love and support. She didn't even tell Jimmy she was walking home that day, apparently. I'm sure she wouldn't have told him this, either- even if the child was his, she might have panicked and decided to run. MOO

Power line trails are usually just grassy, rocky sandy terrain cut through the woods. They can get trucks down them which is part of their purpose. They are not roads by any means. Usually used by off road vehicles like atv's or snowmobiles. I know in winter I always slow down to be sure a sled isn't going to fly out of the trail behind a snow bank. The trail meaning the one in my area I drive by ten times a day...not the one in North Conway.

Thank you for answering my question. So, in other words, if someone was going to snatch her, that would not be a good place to do so, as they couldn't have a car waiting to drive away once they got her.

Not a place they could whip down in a car, not the ones here. They grow over like fields. I think here they will groom once a season. They do cut tree branches down the line.

They could park on the side of the road or into the end of a trail I suppose. I don't know what "the trail" looks like in NC. The ones here definitely have a bigger opening (meaning no trees or larger shrubbery) where they meet a road.

Of course, if you lived right off one of the power line trails, you could just abduct her and get her to your home fairly easily.

Abigail has been referred to in the press as Abi and Abby, alternately so I and probably others are unsure which spelling of her nickname is the correct version tat she uses/prefers

on a different subject, be cautious in speculating about pregnancy. There have been several scoldings from mods on Abigial's threads in regards to speculating based purely on that topic. Just an FYI to spare anyone being taken to task.

If a girl was so upset at family members that she decided to run off, why even bother to write a letter at all? Especially if she didn't want to be found?

Maybe guilt (as I posited earlier). And, my question along the same lines is, if she sent the first letter, why not send another? My guess is that she can't send another letter due to her current circumstances. It breaks my heart but nothing else makes sense to me. (Unless, of course, we are suddenly privy to all of the details of this case and something happened that none of us have speculated.)

I don't think she or anyone would have expected LE to respond like they did. When the FBI and Secret Service get involved, it's getting pretty serious. I think it's possible that the letter was intended to dampen the reaction, which it now seems to have done. Whether that's good or bad remains to be seen.

this thread has had so much drama based on what is or is not allowed at this point it is confused in my own mind so in teh absence of any new info to chew on I am off to find the relevant mod posts telling us what is or is not allowed or open for theorizing. Maybe I am misremembering. That is always possible, I guess. But when in doubt I refer back to the mod posts throughout the threads to note if and when and how the rules for that particular case have evolved or changed.
