Wouldn't it be nice if cell phones came with a panic button like car key fobs?? Then when someone got in trouble they could push a button and recieve help!

The cases I can think of local to me are Michaela Garrett and Jaycee Dugard (sp?) there have been quite a few others over the years here in CA just can't think of the names right now. Just seems that there are many during broad daylight on the way to or from school :(
Yeah, Jaycee Dugard was taken in broad daylight in the line of sight of her stepfather.

(I just read her book and it was excellent. I assume most people here have read it, but if not, totally recommended.)

Wasn't that kind of the idea behind kids needing cell phones at all times in the first place...

I never cease to be dismayed by how rarely cell phones help in zeroing in on actual missing persons cases. Somehow, the phone is seldom a factor in solving a case or finding the person. Yeah, I know there are a few cases. But it seems as though there should be more.

I guess if the abductor does not know you have a phone, you could leave it on and hidden. But since many people who are taken possibly had their face to their phone when it happened...that option is gone.

Walking alone and texting= bad idea for so many reasons

You're old ! :) But so am I . I only read twitter on WS :) haha
I think the reason they seem that way is it's a limited amount of characters, like 20 or 30 keystrokes only is all a ' tweet' allows so each one has to be worded in a way to get the most info into the smallest amount of space. Otherwise it would be an email. I think that's right.

Also, tweets are often a response to another tweet, which you don't see unless you follow that person too. I gave up on tweeting long ago! Too confusing for this hi-tech granny LOL

Wow, it is stressful to be a parent of teen today. I had never heard of the "a****" or another weird site. Sad because it sets kids up for bullying and other problems. It has no rules and is kind of like the wild west for teens. There is great article warning parents about this site and how to deal.

Sorry for the delay...

Nothing going on in North Conway, nor Conway Village.

I see someone posted that I could use my smart phone to post. Not sure how tricky that is. Is there a WS app ? Or maybe I should get a separate Twitter handle for posting my whereabouts and such so I dont clog the board .

When I was driving around tonight I thought of making a video to post up on youtube so you can see what it is like around here. Maybe I'll look into all that stuff , or any other ideas/requests you might have.

I did notice a ton more AH posters around town today. That's the bright spot.

I walk alone and text a lot, and recently a security guard at work stopped me and in a joking way told me not to do it anymore. I listened.

Also, regarding the cell phone panic button: I was just looking for a new Kindle (sat on my old one) and the new Kindle Fire HDX has a feature called "Mayday" where you push a button and are linked to customer service immediately. They can walk you through issues, draw on your screen, and offer instant live support with audio.

I was thinking that this kind of technology could be easily adapted to cell phones. Push a button and get immediate help. With Mayday, the Amazon rep can't see you, but you can see him or her. This could be changed so that whomever was on the receiving end of the "panic" call could see where the caller was located and have audio chat.

My theory on why mom called LE right away: there was something amiss in the house. What that was we don't know and won't know until LE releases the information. My reason to believe this is that the house was immediately cordoned with police tape, correct? I might be way off base, but those are my .02 :moo:

Does anyone have a link from MSM on what time mom got home from work? I keep seeing 7pm in posts and that she called LE at 7:17 but I haven't seen anything reported or released by LE saying what time mom got home. Help please!

thank you. There's tapatalk for WS but I just use my mobile browser and it works well most of the time.

I like the video idea if you're willing. I think it would be great for people to get an idea for the area.

Regarding cell phones, just want to share this info as it may help someone.

I have a free app called Life360, which allows you to accept and add family members (I just have my hubby). I downloaded it prior to making a very long road trip by myself, in case I were to have a wreck or go off the road. It allows your family member to view where you are on a map, and also the path you have traveled instantly on their iPhone.

I have also heard of an app (but do not have it, nor do I know a name for it) that you can pull up and there is a "button" shown on the touch screen that you hold your thumb on. If your thumb should leave this button for I believe 10 seconds, 911 will be called to send help to your location. I believe the idea behind this app being created was for college-aged girls when walking home at night.

Cell phones alone are not enough to keep our kids safe, we need to employ the proper safety features available!

ITA. I wonder why the cell phone companies haven't come up with something to help LE in this respect. Though, I suppose it would be a violation of privacy rights. However, if a parent, the owner of the account, could purchase the phones with some kind of tracking mechanism (that can't be shut off with the phone) in it, wouldn't that be legal? Teens know every trick and app to keep their parents off their back, wouldn't it be better if the technology was embedded into the phone where it could not be taken off with a crafty app or a gps locator or even with shutting down the phone? I can see privacy issues, but IMVHO, teens who are on their parents accounts really aren't entitled to any privacy. That may seem harsh, but as you said Clu, wasn't that the point of giving them the phones in the first place, to keep them in contact, keep them safe?

ALWAYS MOO

ETA: The filthy creeps that take people know how to get rid of the phone. Even if they phone is discarded, it would still be there, with it's hidden and ever on technology no matter what, even if the phone is destroyed, it's only not useful if the person is physically seen at the last place the phone is.

Praying for her family. All along I was quiet as I hoped it was a case of her taking off on her own but now that we have heard she never made it home, I feel deflated. Definitely reminds me of Sierra Lamar in a lot of ways. Almost dreading to read again tomorrow and see that she was found. Praying for a miracle that somehow she is alive and returned safely. Ugh!!!! These are always so sad but here we are. Hugs to all.

This has made me think about how to use my phone/DH's phone (and my toddler's phone sometime in the future) in the event this were to happen. Not only have I installed the "find my iphone" app on it so it will register with the app in the cloud if my husband were to check it on the computer or ipad, but I also think it would be easy to hold down the home key and tell siri to call 911. At least I'd have a fighting chance if it connected.

Hi - Some info about iPhones - The last contact with a cell tower at 3:07 doesn't mean the iPhone has not been used since that time. iPhones use both cell data and WIFI. 3:07 could be the time she reached a destination that had WIFI and her phone switched over and stopped pinging the cell tower. A destination with WIFI could have been someones HOUSE or a BUSINESS that has open WIFI like Dunkin Donuts or many others. Also iPhones send "iMessage" text through data and not just regular SMS cell texts. If a iPhone sends another iPhone a iMessage it is all done through data and the phone company would have no record of a SMS text being sent - just the data used. And if 2 iPhones were iMessaging while connected to WIFI the phone company would have no trace or record of it at all. The only record in these cases would be people coming forward and saying "I got an iMessage from her at such a time" and showing it to LE. Or finding her phone and seeing those messages. Don't know if I explained that well... but I tried!
