Spooky! I'm a Wilmingtonian. And I can say that he definitely does sound from here. Wilmington is south-eastern NC and accents for the majority aren't too distinct, except for a southern twang with some words, while others how strong southern accents but then again they could have been born someone else. I've lived here my whole life and don't have an accent except randomly I'll have a southern drawl with some words. Other times I can asked often if I'm from Minnesota, New York, or Ohio. It's strange.
About him being rural, I don't directly hear a distinct NC rural accent. My guess is if he is from NC, he was born in the city or a larger rural suburb of a city. My mom is married to someone born in very rural NC and it's the stereotypical kind of obnoxious hick accent. There are larger rural towns though, that are on the outskirts of larger cities that I've known people that came from with little to no accent.
I love that someone mentioned John Goodman! I see it too. He was raised in Missouri. He really sounds like my dad except his voice is deeper. My dad was born in the heart of NC (Asheboro) and lived in Missouri, and South Carolina as well. If he was from Missouri that seems probable to me since he was said to be in Texas in the 70s.
So my guess is he grow up in several southern states like my dad. I'm betting on mid-east NC, SC, or Missouri. God I hope he is not from Wilmington!
I mean BE sounds like my dad. Not that my dad sounds like John Goodman just to clarify. But I do see the Missouri in John and my dad.
