Harmony Montgomery case: Cops probe new location for possible clues after father Adam charged with murder

[...]

Massachusetts police probed a location on Friday, April 7, 2023, in connection to the Harmony Montgomery case. Harmony, 5, vanished in 2019 and her father Adam Montgomery, 32, was indicted in January 2023 on charges of second-degree murder. The authorities are now looking out for possible clues in the city of Revere, six miles outside of Boston.

According to local ABC News outlet WCVB, Massachusetts State Police spokesperson David Procopio said that Friday’s search took place in the wetlands along Route 107. He informed the outlet that the search had been “prompted by information developed by investigators.” The authorities were also assisted by Massachusetts State Police Drone Unit and K-9 teams. Additionally, 18 troopers from the Massachusetts State Police Special Emergency Response Team who are trained for handling searches in rough terrains were deployed at the location.

Harmony Montgomery murder: Police search for remains of missing NH girl in Massachusetts

[...]

Police are focusing the renewed effort in Revere, Massachusetts, based on "credible information," said JM, the adoptive father of Harmony's brother J.

"Revere is very close to where her mother Crystal lived during the time of her disappearance, and not far from New Hampshire where her father lived at the time," he told Fox News Digital.

[...]

"We hope she can be found so our son, when he’s older, and can comprehend this preventative tragedy, will have a place to visit and grieve his sister," JM told Fox News Digital on Friday. "He often asks us, ‘Why did my sister, my best friend, have to die?’"

Search Completed in Revere as Part of Harmony Montgomery Murder Investigation

The search was conducted by about two dozen officers, including troopers, state police K9 teams, the state police drone unit and Manchester police officers. The Massachusetts State Police Special Emergency Response Team, which specializes in difficult terrain, was involved.

"That's very manpower-intensive," said Bunker Hill Community College Professor Richard Fox, an expert in forensic science. "And I don't believe they'd be devoting those type of resources unless they were pretty sure of the area that they were looking in."

Because Harmony's body has never been found, Fox says it's critical that investigators gather more evidence as the murder case heads to trial.

Montgomery has been an inmate at Valley Street Jail for about six months. News 9 Investigates has confirmed that he is in a cell alone but often calls his family in Florida.

[...]

Multiple sources confirmed to News 9 Investigates that in March, two detectives from the Manchester Police Department traveled to Florida and met with Montgomery's father and grandmother. It was called a courtesy visit, according to one source. Detectives shared new gruesome, upsetting details about Harmony's death that the family had not heard before.

Officials said they had specific information that led them to the marsh in Revere on Friday, but a source confirmed to News 9 that the information did not come from Montgomery.

Although Harmony's remains are still missing, investigators told News 9 they have amassed a lot of evidence from numerous locations in Manchester that will prove their case.

As murder trial for Adam Montgomery draws closer, parents of murdered Lynn man wait for justice

The investigation into the murder of Harmony Montgomery has shifted out of New England and all the way down the East Coast to Florida.

Ramonita and Arcadio Guzman are the parents of Darlin Guzman, a 28 year old man shot to death outside a convenience store in Lynn in 2008.

As first reported last year, Adam Montgomery has long been the prime suspect in Darlin Guzman’s unsolved murder.

They too are hoping, there is a break in Harmony’s case.

“We not only feel for our son, but as being parents, we feel for the little girl as well. We want justice to be done for both. But if anything, we want justice to be done for this little child that is so innocent,” Ramonita Guzman told me.

A Massachusetts law enforcement source tells me, Adam Montgomery and two members of his family have been the focus of the Guzman murder investigation for 15 years.

The Guzman’s are now patiently waiting for their turn for justice

“This was brutal, he’s a monster. There’s no other word we can think about. I hope and I believe justice will be done for both,” Ramonita Guzman said.

Adam Montgomery is a suspect in the Guzman murder, he is not facing any charges in the case.

Investigation for missing girl shifts from New England to Florida

Investigators traveled to Florida to speak to Harmony Montgomery’s relatives.

The trip south comes after investigators searched the wetlands in Revere, Massachusetts, last Friday.

While authorities didn’t disclose if they found anything in the marshy area, NewsNation law and justice contributor Jennifer Coffindaffer said it would’ve been difficult to find anything there now.

“This would be extremely difficult to find anything here after this long period of time. And because of the marshland — just the environment being wet and salty, and all the issues that they would face in a body surviving that condition,” she explained.

After the disappearance and presumed murder of 5-year-old Harmony Montgomery in 2019, Massachusetts’ Office of the Child Advocate (OCA) urged the state to make changes to its custody system, which failed to protect the young girl from her father, now charged with her murder. But according to a new OCA report out this month, the state continues to fail its most vulnerable children. Retired Judge Carol Erskine, who criticizes the “defective system” in her forthcoming book, “A Cruel Injustice” joined Sue O’Connell, along with Blair and Johnathon Miller, the adopted fathers of Montgomery’s half-brother.

Adoptive fathers of Harmony Montgomery's brother want to change a failed custody system

Harmony's brother Jamison asks about her often, the parents say.

"It is very difficult to answer his questions. He looks at us and says, 'Why did my sister have to die? Why did someone have to hurt my sister?'" Bobbitt-Miller said. "That was the only stable person in his life until he was adopted."

Blair Miller said state agencies and lawmakers should implement improvements to make sure such a case doesn't happen again, but they haven't.

"Why hasn't enough changed to make sure this doesn't happen again?" Miller asked.

Harmony is presumed dead and her father, Adam Montgomery, has been charged with her murder. Harmony had stayed in the care of her father despite signs of abuse. A new report from the Office of the Child Advocate says the state is not adequately protecting kids in custody cases.

Retired Judge Carol Erskine, who aided in Jamison's adoption and is writing a book about Harmony's case, said one change could come from a Massachusetts law that lets children decide where they want to stay.

Final hearing before Adam Montgomery weapons trial held

[...]

Prosecutors said at a pretrial hearing Tuesday that they anticipate calling about 15 witnesses for the weapons trial, while defense lawyers said they could call four to five witnesses or more.

At the beginning of the hearing, Judge Amy Messer said that Adam Montgomery refused transport for the court appearance, but the subject was not mentioned again after a brief sidebar.

One issue that came up at the hearing related to the alleged abuse of Kayla Montgomery by her estranged husband Adam Montgomery. Prosecutors submitted evidence this week that includes grand jury testimony from Kayla Montgomery alleging abuse.

"She outlines in detail the extensive abuse that she suffered at the defendant's hands in direct correlation to the threat that she posed to him in respect to turning over evidence," prosecutor R. Christopher Knowles said.

Defense lawyers requested an evidentiary hearing related to the matter.

Legal issues hang over upcoming trial of Adam Montgomery

[...]

Kayla Montgomery is expected to testify about seeing stolen guns in the family’s Gifford Road home in the fall of 2019.

But two issues arise out of that. Adam Montgomery’s lawyer wants any conversations between the two deemed inadmissible, citing a marital privilege that prevents the introduction of such statements.

Meanwhile, prosecutors want to introduce evidence of physical abuse of Kayla Montgomery to explain why she initially denied seeing the guns when she spoke to police.

Abuse took place “like pretty much every day,” Kayla Montgomery told police, according to court records. Adam Montgomery assaulted his wife, threatened her and restricted her movements, all while accusing her of telling on him.

“A lot of times. I like can’t even count,” she told police about the frequency of being hit or punched. Prosecutors say the threats and abuse explain the initial lies.

One of the witnesses expected to testify against him in both trials is his estranged wife Kayla Montgomery, who was convicted of perjury for lying to a grand jury.

Caroline Smith, the defense attorney, said she intends to use that conviction to attack her credibility at the trial. Prosecutors, meanwhile, said she lied because she was being abused by Adam Montgomery.

“She documented the abuse. I've attached a photograph with two black eyes. That's just one of the photographs that we have in this case associated with the abuse,” Chris Knowles, a New Hampshire assistant attorney general, said.

[...]

The defense team is also trying to argue that the three firearms involved were all stolen at the same time and that Adam Montgomery hasn't been charged in connection with the third weapon. Prosecutors said that point is irrelevant.

“At issue in this case is a shotgun and a rifle. The defendant was never charged with a .380,” Knowles said.

There are still a number of outstanding issues. Messer said she hopes to have a ruling on those by the end of the week.
