Officials searching for missing Phillips Exeter student

A search was underway Wednesday in the area around the Phillips Exeter Academy campus after a 17-year-old student disappeared Tuesday afternoon.

Police Chief William Shupe said Jed Breen was last seen by faculty heading toward trails near the school’s stadium at the end of Gardner Street.

Shupe said police were notified about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday that Breen had left Exeter Hospital on foot before he disappeared.

WMUR-TV reported that Breen was found unconscious in a yard on Tuesday, went to the hospital where he was treated for dehydration, but then left on his own and hasn’t been seen since.

Patti Gormley said she heard from another friend and that Jed Breen, 17, was found alive in Hartford, Conn., and that his parents are en route.

“I don't know anything more than that other than Jed is alive and it's going to be OK,” Gormley said.

Missing Phillips Exeter Academy student found safe in Connecticut

Exeter Police Chief William Shupe said Breen was located after he sent emails to his parents from a public computer in Hartford.

"We started to receive some email messages that Jed was sending to his folks," Shupe said.

"We worked closely with his folks to hammer down an IP address. Through that, we were able to get some out-of-state authorities to locate Jed and get him back to his family."

There was no information released about why Breen went to Hartford, but Shupe said there was no foul play involved.
