I did notice the bit about the extra police car on the webpage & have also been looking into finding reported instances of such a thing happening in relation to New Hampshire in particular. I actually found a few instances of such a thing.
It evidently isn't a thing totally unheard of for people to do.

The impersonating an officer charge stems from an incident on Sept. 28. On that date, Parks was stopped in the parking lot of Master McGraths in Seabrook by Seabrook Sgt. Michael Gallagher. Asked for identification, Parks showed Gallagher a sheriffs badge identifying him as a deputy sheriff out of New London, Conn.
