PRESS RELEASE

Search for Missing MA Man Conducted on Mt. Washington

Thompson & Meserve’s Purchase – A search for a missing person was conducted by a team comprising of Fish & Game Conservation Officers, U.S. Forest Service Snow Rangers, Mountain Rescue Services (MRS) and Androscoggin Valley Search & Rescue (AVSAR). The Mt. Washington Observatory and Mt. Washington Auto Road provided logistical support to get the searchers up above tree line.

Officials say the man, identified as Porith Stephon Sou, 21, of Dracut, MA has been listed as missing since Sunday, March 10th but information on his whereabouts remained unknown until his vehicle was located parked at Pinkham Notch Visitor Center in Pinkham’s Grant on Saturday March 16th.

With very little to go on, searchers received information that Sou might have been seen hiking in the Cutler River drainage on Friday March 8th and most recently on the Mt. Washington Auto Road on Saturday March 9th. Searchers combed the trails and woodlands in these general areas searching for any signs of Sou.

The report of a person matching Sou’s description hiking on the Mt. Washington Auto Road was the most promising lead, but a search of the area failed to turn up any clues. Due to the immense area, deep snow, and the lack of specificity as to where Sou might have gone, the search has been suspended pending any additional information.

No further information available at this time.

Hi!
New member/local to the area where this young man is from and was hiking.

Being in this community there is a general suspicion that there is more to this. The Facebook page dedicated to his search efforts that is moderated by his family states in the description that his phone last pinged off a tower in Westford, MA a day after he went missing on March 10th 2019. Westford, MA and Mount Washington, NH are 175 miles or about 3.5 hours apart. Seems odd how this could occur if he went missing on the mountain which is the "official" theory right now.

I've been following this case from the beginning, and for whatever reason I feel that this young man left on purpose. His car was found parked in a lot leading to a clear trail. I understand people go missing/get lost sometimes but this area is very well marked and frequented, especially at the time of year he was there. Also, there seems to be some intention and planning to what Stephen did, at least in my opinion.

That being said! He may not want to be found or have his family contact him, but if we could just maybe find if he is alive, he has the right to not speak with or see his family as he's an adult. It would just be nice to see if he went anywhere and why as well as giving his family who's been trying so hard to find him some peace of mind.

Here's some pictures of him.

He is Cambodian so he may have connections or be inclined to go to other Cambodian communities. Aside from Lowell; Southern California, Rhode Island and Minnesota have very large Cambodian communities. If there are any Cambodian members who live in these areas it may be helpful for them to think or keep an eye for a new young man in their community within that last few years.

Let me start off by stating that there is an existing thread for this case: NH - NH - Porith Stephon Sou, 21, car located at Pinkham Notch, Mt. Washington, Coos County, 10 Mar 2019 (websleuths.com)

That being said, I wanted to repost with the MA tag since the missing person is from MA, as well as post a bit more information on this case:

Found posted by a friend to his Facebook wall: "Hello Facebook, my best friend has been missing since Friday and the last update we have on his location was his phone pinging in the Chelmsford/Westford area for a couple minutes Sunday, March 10th around 330 and hasn’t been on since."

If this is true how can he be assumed missing on Mount Washington??

In his car, they found a sporting goods store receipt.
“He stopped at the store, grabbed a new coat, new pack, some ice picks, boots,” said Tevin Meas-Em, Sou’s friend.”
So, it seemed like he intended to hike this difficult hike.

A quote from his aunt:
“He struggled with mental health since he was a teenager,” Linda Chan Flynn said.
That’s never a good thing in these missing person cases…

He is said to have not been an experienced hiker, having only done a “handful of day hikes in ratty sneakers”, according to the article.

Search For Dracut Man On Mount Washington Trails Suspended

Trying to think of a possibility for his phone pinging elsewhere the next day…maybe he ditched or lost the phone, and someone found it and tried to use it?

How kind of you to have a special caring for this young man’s case @RoseA95 . How sad it has been over two years.

Thank you for this! Mental health is always a tricky factor when it comes to these missing persons cases. If there wasn't this cell phone ping I don't think I'd be so caught up on other possibilities.
In favor of him running away; his age, and his mental health. Maybe he was seeking something new/away from the environment that was impacting his mental health.
Of course nothing is off the table as there is no proof either way. Hopefully something leads somewhere soon!
