Won Jang, 20, of Middletown, Delaware, had been reported missing late Sunday afternoon after the gathering Saturday night, a Dartmouth official said. State and local emergency responders searched the river and found his body Sunday evening, according to Scott Brown, dean of the college.

“There is no indication that Won’s death involved foul play,” Brown wrote in a message to the Dartmouth community.

Dartmouth College suspends multiple Greek organizations amid student death investigation

Dartmouth College has suspended two Greek organizations amid the investigation into Won Jang's death and reports of possible hazing.

The college announced on Tuesday it had suspended Beta Alpha Omega, a fraternity, and Alpha Phi, a sorority, while Hanover police investigate. The college said Beta Alpha Omega was disciplined after an event last fall.

Hanover police said Jang was last seen on Saturday in the area of 8 Boathouse Road around 9:30 p.m. According to Dartmouth College, Jang was at a social gathering before he disappeared.

After an extensive search that lasted several hours, Hanover police recovered Jang's body in the Connecticut River approximately 65 feet offshore.

Friends of Jang said he had attended a social gathering by the river that night thrown by his fraternity and a sorority, and that alcohol had been present, according to student newspaper The Dartmouth.

The party was hosted by Alpha Phi sorority and alcohol was provided by Beta Alpha Omega. Most of those at the party were under 21. At the end of the party, police said several attendees decided to swim in the river. While at the river, a heavy rainstorm hit and most people left. Jang, whose family told authorities he could not swim, was left behind.''

Fraternity horror stories like these and ones involving hazing convinced me not to join one when I was in college. I felt like I fit in just fine anyway.

This article says LE received several anonymous tips that he was a "hazing" victim but LE does not believe at this time that he was.

Drinking culture again destroying lives (I thought this only happened here in the UK where lots and lots of people have a sick obsession with alcohol to mask their lack of social skills) and putting young people under pressure to ''fit in'' for fear they would spend all their university years lonely and without friends if they do not comply to the not-gentle-at-all requests from the bullies to drink with them.

Absolutely horrible how they left this young boy behind in the river :-( my heart breaks for his family.
